Job Summary/Basic Function
Maryville University is seeking a culturally aware Public Safety Officer to maintain a safe and secure living and working environment on a diverse and multicultural campus. The Public Safety Officer will complete patrol enforcement and community services during the assigned shift and conduct investigations concerning university and departmental policy and appropriate laws. The Public Safety Officer will respond to service calls requiring excellent customer service focused to serve the diverse and multicultural campus population of faculty staff students and visitors.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervision and Leadership:
Provide leadership guidance and supervision to a team of public safety officers ensuring the highest standards of professionalism integrity and customer service.
Conduct regular performance evaluations training sessions and professional development opportunities for officers to enhance their skills and maintain compliance with university policies and procedures.
Foster a positive work environment that encourages teamwork collaboration and open communication among officers.
Provide 5star service to the community.
Campus Safety and Security:
Enforce university policies rules and regulations to maintain a safe and secure campus environment.
Conduct regular patrols of the campus including buildings parking lots and other facilities to deter criminal activity and respond to emergencies or incidents promptly.
Investigate and document all incidents accidents or suspicious activities ensuring accurate and detailed reports are filed in a timely manner.
Coordinate emergency response procedures including evacuation plans crisis management and disaster preparedness.
Perform all the duties of a Public Safety Officer as well as other duties as assigned.
Community Engagement and Education:
Develop and maintain positive relationships with students faculty staff and other members of the university community fostering a sense of trust and cooperation.
Organize and participate in educational programs workshops and seminars to raise awareness about personal safety crime prevention and emergency preparedness.
Act as a liaison between the Public Safety department and other university departments attending meetings and providing input on matters related to campus safety.
Training and Compliance:
Stay updated on current laws regulations and best practices related to public safety and law enforcement.
Provide training for officers on topics such as field training use of force response protocols conflict resolution and effective communication.
Ensure officers adhere to all applicable federal state and local laws as well as university policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 21 years of age.
U.S. citizen or permanent resident as required to obtain private security officer license.
No felony convictions.
Free of any type of chemical dependency.
Must possess and maintain (or obtain within 90 day of hire) an armed private security officer license under the guidelines of the St. Louis County Police Department.
Ability to obtain certification to carry an issued firearm ASP baton OC Spray and handcuffs.
Ability to obtain and maintain certifications in basic first aid CPR and AED.
Successful completion of a background investigation psychological screening and drug screening.
Three years of experience in campus public safety security law enforcement or related field.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to multitask and set priorities.
Strong human relations skills with the ability to interact positively with a diverse University population.
Ability to work with others in a team atmosphere.
Good organizational and management skills.
Ability to work all shifts weekends and holidays.
High School Diploma.
Reliable transportation to be able to report to work for all assigned shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
Respond to any crisis that may occur on campus including severe weather fire medical emergencies hazardous material incidents chemical spill/accidents. Incidents may occur in adverse weather high heat cold temperatures snow rain earthquakes etc.
Physical stamina including ability to stand for extended periods of time up to 4 hours
Ability to lift/push/pull/ or carry items up to 40lbs
No limitations of motion or function; must be able to enter/exit patrol vehicle provide foot patrols as needed provide first aidincluding CPR unassisted
