PRIMARY PURPOSE
To provide support for nursing students in the Associate of Applied Science degree program and Facilitate Clinical/Practicum instruction on the SWOCC Coos Bay and Curry campuses. The Nurse Educator will facilitate clinical practicum and lab practicum instruction on the SWOCC Coos Bay campus.
The Nurse Educator is a faculty position within the Nursing Department and will have a teaching assignment in the lab and or Clinical portion of the nursing program implementing curriculum developed by the primary nursing faculty assisting faculty with standardized testing and serving as the achievement and skills coach mentoring and evaluating students in study skills and in the achievement of psychomotor skills prior to practicing in the clinical setting. The Nurse Educator will work with students from across the nursing program both local and at distance.
Description of Essential Functions
Instruction 80 of Time)
- Teach activity Lab and or Clinical based courses in Nursing program. Teach course information to students in groups and individually using instructional methodology appropriate to the audience and to the subject (e.g. lecture demonstration group discussion technologyenhanced delivery computerassisted delivery and distance delivery). Must be able to explain and deliver materials in a variety of ways to meet the needs of a broad range of learning abilities.
- Implements lab curriculum:
- Organizes equipment and supplies for Lab learning activities.
- Assists with the setup and takedown of Lab learning activities.
- Supervises open lab practice sessions.
- Assists with instruction supervised practice and assessment for clinical practicum labs.
- Available for readmission and advanced placement skills assessments.
- Evaluates student performance in the achievement of Lab outcomes in the clinical practicum lab.
- Maintains Lab evaluation tools and attendance records.
- Collaboratively grades student performance with the primary Faculty.
- Reports and records grades and attendance for the nursing course.
- Curriculum development and modification by working with the Director of Nursing and other department faculty members in developing or modifying course content course objective standards and instructional methods degree and certificate programs.
- Design supplemental teaching materials. Faculty are responsible for developing and designing materials to enhance and supplement classroom and lab instruction including but not limited to various forms of audiovisual materials handouts graphics and exercises .
- Evaluate students in accordance with the criteria in the course outline and other applicable college policies and procedures. Responsible for turning in grades according to college policy and procedure. Progresses student performance issues with primary Nursing Faculty and the appropriate clinical instructor according to program policy. Implements student remediation plans generated by faculty.
- Create a course syllabus for each course taught which includes but is not limited to: course outcomes course structure materials to be covered and grading criteria due dates exam dates and office hours.
- Provides student Lab orientation sessions.
Advising 10 of Time)
- Advise students as assigned. Meet with assigned students at least once each term to assist students in determining goals inform students of program and degree requirements review student schedules and progress refer students to needed services.
- Maintain records of advising sessions to include dates of meetings student major or goals student progress and other pertinent information.
Other Institutional Duties 10 of Time)
- Demonstrate continued professional growth by staying current in and expanding knowledge of subject area and teaching techniques through a plan of professional development. Attend conferences and professional meetings.
- All faculty are expected to participate in and provide information necessary for the recruitment and retention of students into their programs the marketing of courses programs and the college. This may include travel and working with students and faculty in high schools colleges and other institutions and public and private agencies.
- Serve on faculty committees both in the department and in the faculty at large as appointed by the Dean or the Faculty Senate.
- Attend student graduation ceremony at the end of the academic year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in nursing.
Have at least two 2 years of nursing experience.
Candidates must meet qualifications set forth by the Oregon State Board of Nursing Oregon Administrative Rules for Division 21..

- Mastery of the subject area at a sufficient level to instruct and coach students in the knowledge skills and attitudes requisite for success in the courses and programs at Southwestern. Ability to evaluate student programs both empirically and holistically and to prescribe and develop curriculum materials for individuals and classes.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn teaching methods to instruct students of a variety of ages backgrounds and learning abilities. Ability to adapt to various audiences to find various explanations and to facilitate various learning styles.
- Ability to work with and cooperate with college faculty and staff at all levels as a team member with the Vice President of Instruction Instructional Director other faculty staff and related industry/businesses in developing course content objectives standards program curriculum grading and instructional methods.
- The ability to communicate effectively in writing using the English language with or without the use of auxiliary aids of services.
- A level of computer literacy sufficient to use software such as word processing spreadsheets and databases to produce correspondence document and reports as required by the position and the ability to access student information for the purpose of advising and keeping student records.
- Willingness to travel and/or teach/coach at various hours as required.
- Understand develop and provide a learning environment that supports student success diversity and incorporate a sensitivity to diversity in the workplace.
- Willingness to develop knowledge and expertise in any area of the nursing curriculum.
- Ability to review understand and apply concepts presented in the Nursing Program continuing education conferences and professional journals.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSES
Must hold a current unencumbered RN license in the state of Oregon.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge skills and abilities with receive preferred consideration through the selection process.
- Masters degree in Nursing
- Teaching experience at the college level or the equivalent.
