You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailGENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Responsible for facilitating and/or overseeing laboratory operations in the following areas: technical fiscal personnelrelated and managerial. Updates procedures and maintains technical quality in laboratory. Oversees preparation of two budgets for the laboratory. Evaluates performance of Tissue Typing Laboratory employees and hires fires and activates status changes. Develops and implements protocols and policies within the scope of the laboratory and including the New England Organ Bank Inc.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Establishes technical and administrative standards in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards for all lab personnel: monitors compliance with the same and initiates action to improve or maintain performance in accordance with the same.
2.Establishes technical and analytical standards for method evaluation development of research tests to clinical testing evaluation of new instrumentation in accordance with the hospital and clinical laboratories procedures and regulatory standards.
3.Maintains established quality control program through investigation of technical problems daily quality control check and assessment of test results.
4.Directs development implementation and coordination of new laboratory tests/techniques.
5.Verifies and reports test results. This responsibility may be delegated to Technical Histocompatibility Analyst and/or designated senior technologists and who meet requirements of a general supervisor.
6.Answers requests for interpretation of test results and investigates reports of inadequacies/inaccuracies in the laboratory made by physicians; assists Medical Director in resolution of existing problems.
7.Serves as liaison between the laboratory and other hospital departments the New England Organ Bank Inc. and other agencies.
8.Organizes laboratory participation in regional national and international workshops.
9.Oversees management of transplant candidate waitlists in inhouse and UNOS computer systems.
10.Schedules and emcees weekly technical/educational meetings; contacts outside speakers where appropriate in order to update and expand knowledge of laboratory staff in areas of histocompatibility immunology and transplantation.
11.Responsible for hiring counseling evaluation and terminating laboratory employees according to the established policies of the hospital. Oversees work assignments and schedules.
12.Suggests relevant updating and changing of computer programs involved in daytoday work; works with laboratory computer consultant to implement approved changes.
13.Monitors training of new employees and associated individuals (personnel from other hospital laboratories New England Organ Bank staff medical students fellows etc..
14.Is responsible for evaluating the competency of all testing personnel and assuring that the staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly accurately and proficiently. This responsibility may be delegated to the Technical Histocompatibility Analyst or senior technologists who have primary responsibility in the areas that competency is assessed.
15.Is responsible for enrollment and participation in a CMS approved proficiency testing program commensurate with the services offered.
16.Updates on a regular basis and reviews procedure manual annually.
17.Prepares and monitors laboratory operating and capital budgets maintains fiscal control of the areas of responsibility and foresees major equipment and personnel requirements.
18.Approves all purchasing i.e. service and supply contracts.
19.Coordinates work efforts between technologists in the laboratory and research fellows; assists in the transfer of research concepts and procedures to tests and techniques of clinical application.
20.Arranges for fulfillment of all inspection and licensure requirements. Organizes laboratory participation in regular external proficiency testing.
21.Resolves equipment/plant malfunctions through appropriate channels.
22.Is responsible for compliance with ASHI standards TJC (The Joint Commission) National Patient Safety Goals and BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures.
23.Oversees Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance program.
24.Investigates errors of inadequate performance in areas of responsibility. Takes appropriate action to resolve problems and prevent future occurrences.
25.Reports to and takes direction from the Medical Director and Director of Operations in any of the above areas.
26.Performs other duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Must possess equivalent of B.A./B.S. undergraduate degree in medical technology or chemical physical or biological science or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution
OR
other qualifications as described in the Federal Register 42 CFR Subpart M 493..
(There are no organized academic programs which adequately train individuals for work in this field;
broad scholastic background in biology chemistry and immunology is preferred.
2. Job requires technical skills and theoretical background usually acquired during a minimum of five years of experience in an active tissue typing laboratory or experience in human immunogenetics human histocompatibility and/or human transplantation immunology testing under the supervision of a director and/or technical supervisor of an ASHIaccredited or an equivalent ARB approved laboratory.
3. Three years general laboratory supervisory experience required.
4. There are currently no licensure requirements in histocompatibility.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
1.The analytical abilities sufficient to diagnose and correct complex technical problems in the laboratory.
2.The advanced immunological knowledge both practical and theoretical of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action. Job requires that technical recommendations be made to physicians as requested.
3.Excellent interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with hospital and NEOB administration outside physicians and regulatory agency representatives/inspectors in the interpretation of results and solution of problems.
4.Ability to lead and supervise staff plan work effectively and obtain quality results.
5.Highly developed verbal and written communication skills in order to educate technical staff insure efficient and effective workflow and present recommendations to Technical & Medical Directors.
6.Excellent organizational and time management skills needed.
7.High level of analytical ability to resolve technical problems stemming from faulty equipment reagents or abnormal patient cells or sera and to interpret quality control data. Job requires experience sufficient to troubleshoot complex technical problems encountered in the laboratory.
8.An understanding of computer technology and its application to the laboratorys analytical procedures and quality control. Ability to be able to identify modifications/enhancements that would benefit the laboratory in terms of patient safety and efficiency.
9.Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with coworkers subordinates physicians healthcare workers outside visitors and students.
10.Ability to remain calm and productive under pressure and emergency situations which may produce a high level of stress and mental fatigue.
11.A financial aptitude adequate to be able to organize laboratory budgets and maintain fiscal control.
12.Job requires that issues pertaining to personnelrelated decisions be treated with objectivity and confidentiality.
13.Frequent use of computers (about 40 of work time).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1.Exposure to infectious blood tissues (such as spleen lymph node bone marrow aspirate cheek swabs) and other body fluids.
2.Work requires frequent standing and walking (about 50 of work time) and some lifting of supplies (less than 50 pounds).
3.Must possess visual acuity sufficient to distinguish between variations in stained cells; must possess manual dexterity to work with small instruments and delicate equipment and tissues.
4.Noise level is high due to continuous operation of lab equipment.
5.Exposure to normal office environment.
6.Required to carry and respond to a BWH pager.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
1.Approximately 30 direct reports including administrative and technical staff.
2.Responsible for primary designated area in laboratory for purposes of training organization and reporting.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
A basic understanding of fiscal management is preferred.
