GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: The Veterinary Technician for the Knight Surgical Research Lab (KSRL) will be responsible for all aspects of large animal surgery support provided to user groups. This includes preprocedural preparation and periprocedural care of large animals anesthesia administration and/or monitoring and other diagnostics as deemed appropriate. The technologist will also assist in the surgical and anesthesia training of research staff designated and approved by IACUC for these pre intra and postprocedural activities. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide anesthesia and surgical support services at the the Knight Surgical Research Core Lab Performs various techniques according to research models to assist investigators in large animal survival surgery studies. Work with KSRL Operations Director to develop training materials for KSRL Users. Provide anesthesia monitoring and postprocedural recovery when necessary. Schedule and allocate KSRL staff/resources to requested services through collaborative relationships with KSRL users. Develop close working relationships and open channels of communication with KSRL users Surgery Administration and veterinary staff in order to facilitate daily operations scheduling and training. Create required documentation (SOPs Animal Record forms policies etc. to support regulatory compliance and assure consistent quality to research being supported. Serve as pointofcontact for all KSRL users regarding services and requests for large animal research support. Track compliance of staff with IACUC policies related to pre intra and postoperative care including medical records and tracking and administration of controlled substances. Report noncompliance to the Attending Veterinarian. Track quality of services and customer satisfaction Ensure billing to KSRL users is accurate and submitted to Surgery Administrative Director for Research. Performs health checks on all study animals undergoing surgery and procedures in the facility. Reports any health concerns or questions to the responsible investigator and veterinary staff. Maintains facility schedule accommodating investigator needs to the greatest extent possible. Orders and maintains supplies instruments and for the procedure rooms ensuring appropriate inventory levels. Schedules routine maintenance of equipment as needed. Also responsible for keeping a maintenance schedule log. Contact person for regulatory inspections. Responsible for ensuring safe storage of drug supplies and maintaining usage inventory. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors degree in veterinary science preferred; other scientific degrees will be considered; Associates degrees in veterinary science may be considered with related experience. Onsite training will be provided regardless of previous experience. A minimum of two years of veterinary technician experience involving a variety of species required or demonstrated experience providing surgical and diagnostic procedures in an animal setting desired. Experience with livestock and nonhuman primates preferred. Nationally recognized (Licensed or Certified) Veterinary Technician or AALAS LAT required. AALAS LATg or veterinary anesthetist certification preferred. SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Proficient in verbal and written English and Mathematics pertinent to the duties of this position and situations encountered in the animal facility. Computer experience in software such as Word Excel Access Outlook and PowerPoint required Ability to lift and move 50 lbs on a regular basis Long periods of standing Capable of working independently and as a team member with fellow veterinary staff and/or animal care staff. Ability to make decisions regarding daily veterinary care and to address unusual situations that arise within the animal research facilities. Has a customerfocused attitude and enjoys working with similarly dedicated persons in a team fashion within a highenergy research environment. Able to correspond with researchers clearly respectfully and in a timely manner in writing and orally WORKING CONDITIONS: The animal and surgical facilities have a variety of potential environmental hazards. Specifically employees may be exposed to noise dust and chemicals including anesthetic gases extreme heat and animal waste products. The duration of exposure to any of the above is dependent on the assigned duties. Some aspects of this position may expose the incumbent to potentially fatal zoonotic diseases. Appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) may be required and will be provided.
