The Opportunity

The Technical Officer for Image Processing and Analysis will bring additional data evaluation expertise to the UNSW preclinical Imaging facility the Biological Resources Imaging Lab (BRIL) to support our users in image analysis helping them to retrieve research relevant quantitative imaging biomarkers from data acquired on our imaging instruments.

The position will contribute to the implementation and maintenance of BRIL IT systems for image analysis and provide support for a wide range of processing software tools to extract image information for preclinical research projects.

The role will work closely with facility users and other facility staff to provide and customize software packages to cover the full processing pipeline from raw instrument data to processed research outcomes including image transfer conversion structural analysis (coregistration segmentation etc. and biomarker quantification of images from user research projects.

The Position reports to the Head of the Biological Resources Imaging Laboratory and has no direct reports.

About the successful applicant

You have a degree (BSc or MSc) in Biomedical Engineering Computer Science Imaging Science or a related field with a strong foundation in signal and image analysis or informatics as well as experience in signal and image processing algorithms in medical or preclinical domain. Youll also be able to demonstrate the following Skills and Experience:

  • Solid understanding of the operational principles of clinical and preclinical imaging modalities including MRI CT and PET and experience in data postprocessing for structural and molecular/tracer imaging specifically in MRI optical imaging and/or nuclear medicine (PET/SPECT).
  • Implementing and using advanced image processing software packages (such as 3D Slicer FSL MRTrix Camino SPM etc. as well as the ability to support the management and operation of scientific IT infrastructure.
  • Strong programming skills in scientific applications (e.g. Python MATLAB Octave Java C/C) and familiarity with relevant image processing libraries are required. You should also have knowledge of software administration management and deployment tools including version control virtual environments and containerisation.
  • Working with training and supporting others in image analysis within a multidisciplinary research environment. Highlevel consultation and communication skills to build effective working relationships both within and outside your immediate team.
  • Excellent analytical and problemsolving skills with a proven ability to plan and deliver multiple research projects with minimal supervision to deliver research outcomes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to present analytical results write scientific reports and liaise with diverse stakeholders. A commitment to health and safety responsibilities and participation in relevant training is also expected.
  • Finally experience in contributing to successful external funding applications for research projects and infrastructure will be an advantage.
