GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT

The Diabetes Research Group at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is in search of a highly motivated and capable individual to join the Florez laboratory as Scientific Advisor to the group. The groups research covers the entire arc from genomic discovery in type 2 diabetes and related traits through functional and physiological characterization of disease genes to clinical translation of genetic findings.

The role involves a combination of scientific leadership and oversight of research technician work. Primarily the incumbent will be responsible for assisting Dr. Florez in developing research projects that align with the groups vision securing funding to support these projects overseeing the grant portfolio providing mentoring and guidance to lab members giving scientific input to facilitate and ensure they reach their goals and timelines and representing the group to the outside world. The role will require strong writing and analytical skills as well as broad knowledge of the current state of the field of diabetes genetics plus a keen desire to work with trainees and team members in helping them develop and progress. The successful candidate will be teamoriented and goalfocused demonstrating strong interpersonal skills to enable collaboration with project teams peers and management.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Support the group leader in driving the scientific strategy of the group and in translating the vision across multiple projects ensuring the implementation of plans and timely achievement of scientific goals.

Oversee the groups scientific activities and give input to help projects reach their goals according to expected timelines.

Researches develops designs executes and interprets advanced research experiments to achieve scientific goals.

Investigates creates and develops new methods and technologies for research advancement

Contributes important techniques and designs that significantly impact the ways different aspects of science are performed through research endeavors and the preparation of research results.

Provide regular updates to the group leader on scientific progress and identify any difficulties or bottlenecks.

Initiates planning and writing grants project proposals progress reports and scientific publications.

Help group members prepare for scientific presentations and talks.

Attend research conferences/workshops and project meetings to stay current on new methodology and progress in the field.

Direct participation in group research projects including in a leading role.

Scientifically mentor and provide oversight to help them in achieving their research and career goals.

Help with on boarding of new group members in familiarizing them with the range of group activities and research opportunities and orienting them to the wider organization.

Responsible for daytoday running of the group (e.g. lead group meetings) when group leader is absent.

Serve as a primary contact and act as an ambassador for the group.

Strong research design and analytical skills

Expert knowledge of research field

Excellent judgment and ability to interpret information and protocol requirements

Proven track record of presentation and publication of scientific results at meetings and in peerreviewed journals

Ability to work on large collaborative projects and in multidisciplinary teams.

Clear and effective communicator with excellent written and presentation skills.

Strong interpersonal skills essential.

Ability to build strong working relationships and to foster collaboration.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Excellent organization and time management skills. The ability to meet deadlines and to multitask efficiently is a must

Required: 7 years of progressively more responsible experience in a research related filed
