Job Description
The counselor will teach counseling courses and provide academic personal and career exploration support to students as they prepare to transfer to a fouryear college or university. The Counselor will also collaborate with English and Social Sciences faculty teaching freshmanlevel English in alignment with the guidelines set by the Puente State Office. Recruitment of new students to the program is a key priority as is ensuring high retention rates through dedicated efforts and personalized support. The Counselor will establish a oneonone counseling relationship with each Puente student offering ongoing support throughout their time at Cypress College. The Counselor will assist students in creating a comprehensive Student Education Plan and facilitate discussions on major requirements life planning career exploration and transfer requirements. Participate in curriculum development and serve on department division college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities. Participate in cocurricular activities including planning implementing and teaching in special programs designed to support student success. Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle. Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings. Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g. computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient organized and timely manner. Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district college and division policies in the performance of duties. Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions. Develop culturally relevant course content culturally responsive pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American Latinx Native Americans Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students. Work cooperatively with staff and students. Evening and/or weekend assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Desirable Qualifications
Demonstrated success in working with the Puente Project or similar programs focused on Latinx and historically underrepresented and/or marginalized groups. Knowledge of Chicanx/Latinx culture history and experiences in higher education. Experience working with learning communities or cohortbased programs. Understanding of barriers to student success and strategies for fostering retention persistence and completion. Experience integrating culturally relevant pedagogy into counseling practices. Skills in mentoring and coordinating Puente mentors (community professionals who support students). Bilingual proficiency in Spanish. Experience providing academic career and personal counseling. Effective organization and planning skills. Experience in fundraising event planning coordinating field trips and conducting in/outreach.
Minimum Qualifications
Masters in counseling rehabilitation counseling clinical psychology counseling psychology guidance counseling educational counseling social work career development marriage and family therapy or marriage family and child counseling OR Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area. OR The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education training employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee. NOTE : A bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist MFT is an alternative qualification for this discipline.
