Job Description: School Counselor
Reports To: Director of Student Services and School Principal
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid CT State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement if applicable
- Masters Degree preferred
General Description: School counselors design and deliver comprehensive school counseling programs that promote student achievement. These programs are comprehensive in scope preventive in design and developmental in nature. The ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs outlines the components of a comprehensive school counseling program. Counselors adhere to professional and ethical standards and develop a personal plan for continuous professional development (per ASCA and Connecticut Code for Professional Responsibility).
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program that supports all students through a school counseling curriculum individual student planning responsive services community partnership and referrals.
- Facilitate student academic social/emotional and career development through a comprehensive school counseling program that is supported by the school administration through individual counseling small group sessions crisis interventions and referrals.
- Uses current district technology and tools to drive the tracking of student success and outcomes.
- Participate as a member of the schools Scientifically Research Based Intervention Team (SRBI) Student Support Services Team (SSST) Planning and Placement Team Crisis Team School Attendance and other school committees or teams as needed.
- Implement tiered intervention strategies to promote student learning.
- Promote parent engagement through conferences and group presentations including academic and social emotional engagement.
- Collaborate with teachers administration district resources parents community agencies and specialists to support the needs of students and parents.
- Facilitate the plans for students with 504 Accommodations and support students with IEPs.
- Schedule all courses using district scheduling tool and advocate for appropriate student placement.
- Follow district protocol for maintaining accurate student records and communication with parents.
- Participate in the development of students behavior intervention plans and functional behavior assessments.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the components of a comprehensive school counseling program
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child and adolescent growth and development
- Ability to understand and interpret learning assessments and diagnosis
- Adheres to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model ethical standards
- Ability to relate well with students staff administration parents and the community.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year to be determined by the contract between the Norwich Board of Education and the Norwich Teachers League.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of support services.
