JOB TITLE: Routing SpecialistTransportation Department
REPORTS TO: Transportation Administrator
WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt
PAY GRADE: Aux 9
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Routing Specialist under the direction of the Transportation Administrator is responsible for preparing and coordinating bus routes and student assignments with consideration for bus stop and intransit safety meeting established program schedules and maximizing efficiency for hometoschool route service midday route service and summer school route service and is subject to all the same qualifications essential functions rules and regulations as a bus driver.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution
- Acceptable driving record as defined by the Texas Department of Public Safety School Bus Driver Penalty Point System
- Two 2 years previous experience as a school bus driver
- Valid state of Texas Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver License with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
- Current Texas Department of Public Safety School Bus Drivers Certification
- Pass a preemployment Texas School Bus Driver physical exam and preemployment drug test
Preferred:
- Texas Association for Pupil Transportation (TAPT) Pupil Transportation Specialist Certification (or higher)
- Previous experience with computerized bus routing software
- One 1 year prior experience as a bus driver with Spring ISD
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Understanding of the Texas Education Agency (TEA) school transportation funding formula and reporting requirements

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

SAFETY
- Design bus routes that are focused on maximizing the safety of students with respect to bus stop locations and bus path of travel
- Periodically review safety of bus stop locations and adjust as necessary
- Ensure that route descriptions are current and accurate to provide the driver with the proper information
- Make sound recommendations concerning route services required to support district program changes
COURTESY
- Build and maintain supportive relationships between the Transportation Department and other district stakeholders (campuses departments administration etc.
- Foster a department climate of teamwork and mutual respect
- Serve as an ambassador for Spring ISD with parents community other districts business partners and professional organizations
- Effectively communicate with all stakeholders regarding changes to route services
RESPONSIVENESS
- Create monitor adjust and manage the regular and specialneeds route services to support hometoschool and midday transportation
- Make sound recommendations concerning route services required to support district program changes
- Coordinate with Transportation Supervisors regarding transportation as a related service for students with special needs to ensure that route services are provided appropriately
- Coordinate with Transportation Supervisors regarding campus transportation needs (loading zones bus lineups etc.
- Monitor student ridership and adjust bus routes to accommodate overloads
- Ensure that data is regularly imported into the routing software from the district student information system and that students are assigned to routes accordingly
- Coordinate with Supplemental Service Specialist regarding integrating supplemental route services into regular route services
- Collect and maintain data for the preparation of the annual Texas Education Agency Route Services and Operations reports
- Assist in the preparation of the annual Texas Education Agency Route Services and Operations reports
- Support Spring ISD attendance boundary planning and changes as necessary
- Maintain and manage the online bus route and campus zoning information
- Receive review and render decision on route change requests submitted by drivers
- Provide support for emergency situations involving a transportation component
- Serve as a substitute bus driver or attendant when necessary
EFFICIENCY
- Ensure timely processing of route service requests
- Ensure accuracy of the bus route information available online to stakeholders
- Communicate and coordinate with Dispatchers and Supplemental Service Specialist to maintain efficiency in scheduling staff to supplemental assignments with respect to ontime performance and overtime considerations
- Monitor and adjust route services with respect to ontime performance and efficient use of district resources
- Provide input into the periodic performance appraisal of drivers and attendants
- Perform all other duties as assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility prolonged sitting repetitive hand and arm motions some lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling. This position will also require traveling within the district. Mental demands: Maintain emotional control ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written in English for safety reasons. Environmental Conditions: Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot and cold) and vehicle fumes.
