The Program
Our Graduate Development Program will help kick start your career build professional skills and contribute to high profile and diverse work with real impact. The Program is designed to enhance the skills you have acquired at university and introduce you to working in the Australian Public Service (APS). You will develop professional public sector skills through a combination of work rotations internal training and formal learning and development. The Program provides a unique 11 month accelerated career progression with salary increases and advancement from the APS Level 3 to APS Level 5 on successful completion.

Throughout the Program you will have access to professional development opportunities. Upon successful completion of the Program you may receive financial support and paid leave to undertake further study in relevant areas and broader Australian Public Service and mobility and career progression within the department.
Rotations
Throughout our Graduate Program you will undertake three workplace rotations over 11 months. This allows you to get a sense of the diversity of work across our portfolio and make a meaningful contribution in each area. Rotation placements are determined through an Expression of Interest (EOI) where individual preferences are matched with organisational requirements as much as possible.

Affirmative Measure Vacancy
This recruitment round is advertised as an affirmative measure. The affirmative measure is designed to promote the right to equality and nondiscrimination in employment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and increase the number of First Nations employees in the APS.
Subsection 262 of the Commissioners Directions provides that the agency head or delegate must ensure that for a vacancy under this affirmative measure the only eligible applicants:
Candidates who apply under the affirmative measure will need to meet minimum benchmarks to progress through the assessment stages.
Evidence of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status
An agency head or their delegate must be satisfied that applicants under the affirmative measure meet the three criteria above.
Evidence is not required at the time of application but will need to be provided before commencement of the program.

Step 1: Apply online
The first stage of the application process is online. Allow yourself around one hour to complete the application process and submit by 11.30pm (AEST) on the closing date to avoid any technical issues. In addition to providing information about your interests work experience and general application criteria (e.g. educational experience) you will require a copy of your current resume and academic transcript.
Written Motivational Question: You will be asked to respond to the below questions in 500 words. We want to learn about your motivation in applying for the Program and what skills you will bring to the department. Dont forget to respond using the STAR method and think about the capabilities we are looking for that have been outlined in this job pack.
Step 2: Video and written submissions
If you are successful in progressing to the next stage of the process you will be asked to complete the following two online assessments:
Targeted Questions/Work Sample: You will be asked to provide written responses that demonstrate your competency in an area critical to success in a graduate role. This may be in the form of multiple questions or as a work sample to an important piece of work you may perform as a graduate.
Online Video Questions: You will also be asked to record an online video response to interview questions. This is your chance to showcase any research you have done into the department and outline the skills you have acquired in your working/university career. You will have the opportunity to test out how the interview works with sample questions prior to responding to the actual questions.
You will need to submit your targeted questions and video response within a set timeframe of receiving your invitation we will provide you plenty of notice and will be available to discuss if you have any questions or concerns.
Step 3: Virtual Assessment Centre
After shortlisting is complete you may be invited to attend our Virtual Assessment Centre. This is where the representatives of the department will be able to chat with you and get to know you whilst also assessing your suitability for the program during virtual group activities.

We may contact your two chosen referees to confirm your work experience and employment history.

Step 5: Offers
Congratulations you did it! Our team want you to join the department as part of a fantastic cohort of future leaders.
Offers will be made to successful candidates. A merit pool may be established dependent on how many suitable candidates are ranked for any potential late offers. All unsuccessful candidates will be notified via email and will be able to receive feedback.
