Job Description

Job Summary
The Department of Art and Art History in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Arlington invites applications for a fulltime Assistant Professor TenureTrack appointment in Painting who also will serve as the Area Coordinator for the Painting area. Research specializations: Candidate must be well trained in all modes of painting and various mediums and techniques in 2D art. The candidate would need to be a versatile artist in terms of techniques materials use and contemporary approaches to painting. Candidates must be artists demonstrating the potential to establish a significant track record of creative activity including exhibitions and professional involvement in the field at the national and international levels. Teaching specializations: Applicants need to be qualified to teach all aspects of painting and painting support preparation and understand and communicate safety concerns and issues relating to painting materials. Candidates must be able to teach techniques and materials use in both traditional and contemporary painting practice. All studio faculty work with MFA students in Intermedia either in coursework through their committees or by serving as the students Committee Chair. Excellent communication with other faculty members as well as with students is paramount to success in this role. Candidates must be capable of effective critique of student artwork in both formative and summative feedback activities and performing dedicated teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful applicant would be able to teach across all or most of the following undergraduate and graduate courses: ART 2371 Painting ART 3371 Intermediate Painting ART 4371 Advanced Painting ART 3349 Water Media Painting ART 3368 Digital Painting ART 5340 Research in Studio Intermedia (Graduate program) The successful applicant will be expected to act as Painting Area Coordinator and to lead in student advising and mentoring activities for Painting majors. Additional duties include coordinating and overseeing the Concentration Portfolio Review process for Painting area students providing faculty mentoring and supervision in the Painting area leading faculty in area meetings representing the area at the departmental level working with area faculty to schedule courses offered and assigning instructors to courses for review by the department facilities management for the Painting studios and managing the budget of the Painting area. This role also holds responsibility for overseeing safety instruction in the area ensuring full compliance with all the relevant health and safety procedures and policies. This includes managing chemical inventories shop and tool use and safety faculty and work study training studio cleanliness and equipment maintenance and other related duties. Additionally they will be expected to serve on other university college and departmental committees as assigned. Candidates should be aware of the UTA 2030 strategic plan: and consider how we can develop cultural initiatives that will maximize our geographic socioeconomic and cultural presence to enhance our worldwide community partnerships as we pursue the goals of UTA 2030. In accordance with USCIS regulations successful applicants must be legally able to accept work in the United States. Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Practicing as an active exhibiting artist with regional and / or national exhibitions track record demonstrating the potential to establish a significant track record of creative activity including exhibitions and professional involvement in the field at the national and international levels. Working as an artist actively engaged with the future of image making and new directions in the contemporary expanded field of painting experienced with a wide array of materials and techniques and familiar with relevant historical and contemporary discourse. Qualified to teach all aspects of painting and painting support preparation with the ability to teach both traditional and contemporary painting techniques and materials use at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Communicating an understanding of safety concerns and issues relating to painting materials and support fabrication. Excellent communication skills in writing and verbally. Effective communication with other faculty and with students. Ability to teach across the following courses: ART 2371 Painting ART 3371 Intermediate Painting ART 4371 Advanced Painting ART 3349 Water Media Painting ART 5340 Research in Studio Intermedia (Graduate program) Ability to serve as Painting Area Coordinator. Capable of leading student advising and mentoring activities for area students. Ability to coordinate and oversee the Concentration Portfolio Review process for area students. Capable of providing faculty mentoring and supervision in the painting area. Ability to manage the areas budget. Ability to lead facilities management for the area including maintaining the areas equipment. Ability to ensure all health and safety compliance for the painting area and training of all area faculty and students on the protocols policies and procedures for same.

Required Qualifications
A terminal degree MFA in Painting from an accredited (recognized equivalent) university. Universitylevel teaching experience. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant artistic design principles standards and concepts in painting and of relevant pedagogical approaches in teaching painting. Ability to teach at all levels of the areas undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Demonstration of ability to contribute to the excellence of the academic community through creative activity / research teaching advising and service. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Actively researching at a national and/or international level. An effective mentor and advisor of students. Demonstrating an awareness of the UTA 2030 Strategic Plan and show consideration of how we can develop cultural initiatives that make effective use of our resources while helping us contribute to the reaching of the UTA 2030 goals.

Preferred Qualifications
Minimum two 2 years of teaching experience in painting courses at the university level. Actively engaged in contemporary arts discourse and recent historic debates such as postmodern theory. Ability to teach ART 3368 Digital Painting. Experience in digital art making and mixed media as well as traditional painting methods and techniques as well. Developing or sustained record of national and / or international exhibitions; artist residencies or conference presentations. Capable of delivering effective critique of student artwork in both formative and summative feedback activities. Ability to develop and nurture a competitive curriculum including proposals for special topics courses that would enhance the academic goals of the Painting area. Ability to create and advance multidisciplinary courses that would enhance strategic goals for the department and university. Demonstrating ability to support the fabrication training needs for students and oversee their health and safety training and maintenance of OSHA standards for the area (particularly for the making of wooden stretchers for example). Graduatelevel research/thesis supervision and advising experience. Record of or potential for grant awarded activity. Experience conducting portfolio reviews. Experience with or ability for maintaining a frame making workshop as well. Familiarity with NASAD standards on delivering competencies to students in painting.
