Job Description

Overview:

The City of Boston seeks to hire a Youth and Schools Manager to support the work of the Senior Advisor to the Mayor for Youth and Schools. This role collaborates closely with Boston Public Schools and other city departments as well as partner organizations to advance the administrations priorities around youth and education. This role supports the strategic coordination and implementation of a variety of projects opportunities and policies to best support youth and their families in the City of Boston. Candidates applying should have experience or interest in Secondary Schools (grades 712.

The ideal candidate is detailoriented and organized has a willingness to learn and quickly adapt to changing situations and is excited about taking on new challenges as priorities arise in a fastpaced environment. They will have familiarity or a commitment to learn the programs policies and structures related to education youth development and family and community advancement. A strong candidate will have a knack for strategic planning and implementation as well as building systems and policies that are intuitive and culturally responsive to Bostons residents. They will also have a deep commitment to centering social justice and knowledge of the City of Boston.

Responsibilities:

  • Drives key projects and provides crossdepartmental coordination for the strategic implementation of priorities related to youth and schools with a particular focus on Boston Public Schools grades 712 (secondary schools).
  • Communicates strategic priorities in writing & develops and executes plans for implementation.
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing with a diverse range of people including constituents city personnel and external partners.
  • Accurately and appropriately delivers information moves forward work and outcomes and communicates next steps.
  • New tasks and priorities constantly arise in the Mayors Office. There are often emerging issues to troubleshoot and solve. The person in this role must be adaptive and able to find and implement solutions.
  • This role works closely with team members at Boston Public Schools.
  • Reports to and supports the Senior Advisor to the Mayor for Youth and Schools.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least four 4 years of fulltime equivalent experience in preK12 education youth development program administration or policy development. Personal experience and advocacy may substitute for formal professional experience as well as experience in Boston City Departments.
  • A bachelors degree is required.
  • Strong planning organization and project management skills with the ability to prioritize the most important and pressing work in a fastpaced environment. Strong ability to effectively work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong writing ability in a diversity of formats including memos and strategic plans. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse range of people.
  • Demonstrated passion for collaboration creative problemsolving and tackling complex systemic issues. Ability to adapt and excitement to take on new challenges and responsibilities as new priorities arise.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative work independently with limited direct supervision and perform assigned duties in an accurate timely and professional manner.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment; maintain confidentiality with highly sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and an understanding of challenges facing communities of color immigrant communities as well as low and moderateincome families especially in the context of preK12 education.
  • Familiarity with Bostons education ecosystem including Boston Public Schools and relevant organizations and programs serving young people and families.
  • Language skills in languages other than English are strongly preferred.
