Job Description

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG) a very large diverse and active research and teaching department that encompasses both statuary and endowed components shares a leading role in research and teaching in modern biology at Cornell University.

Provide high level research support and laboratory management in a genetics cell and molecular biology research lab that analyzes the subcellular locations and biochemical characteristics of Drosophila proteins including generating studying and maintaining transgenic and other Drosophila strains. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Initiate and perform experiments to make and manipulate DNA constructs including creation and maintenance of transgenic fly lines.
  • Evaluate lab methods procedures and techniques based on established objectives. Participate in development of research methods.
  • Prepare and contribute to the assembly of data and other information for publications and grant applications as requested and assist in preparing papers for publication.
  • Manage the daily operations and workflow in the laboratory. Supervise labassistants.
  • Raise manipulate and harvest Drosophila eggs embryos larvae and adults. Prepare samples for microscopy including use of antibodies and stains.
  • Use fluorescence and confocal microscopy to examine the location of DNA and proteins in Drosophila embryos and cells.
  • Extract and purify proteins and antibodies and perform gel electrophoresis Western blotting and other methods of protein manipulation. Affinitypurify antibodies. Carry out DNA manipulations including generating constructs for CRISPRbased genome editing.
  • Ensure that lab personnel adhere to all biohazard control and laboratory safety protocols.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies equipment inventory and records. Coordinate ordering of Drosophila strains.
  • Provide training of staff and students on the use of equipment including confocal microscope and in procedures such as Western blotting transgenestabilization stock maintenance and CRISPRconstruct design.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent (Masters preferred); >5 years of additional experience or equivalent.
  • Experience with molecular biology genetics and/or microscopy.
  • Substantial experience and proficiency with spreadsheet and/or statistical and/or image analysis software.
  • Ability to work independently; exercise judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent; balance conflicting priorities; and make decisions from a range of choices.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of people.
  • Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process/procedures is the norm.
  • Must be personable flexible possess excellent organizational listening and communication skills be able to multitask and take pride in their work while working in a teamoriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with protein and DNA manipulation antibody detection fluorescence microscopy.
  • Previous experience with antibodydetection techniques and with Drosophila genetics/manipulation is highly desired.
  • Experience with labmanagement and safety protocols and with supervision of undergraduate labassistants is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of three to four years onthejob experience with Mac and/or PC operating system.
