FULLTIME JOB VACANCY
Grants Officer Financial Planning and Analysis
Finance Division
Multiple Office Locations Considered

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Grants Officer to provide support to the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team. The Finance Division is led by the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for providing fiscal management implementing financial strategy and maintaining the fiscal integrity of HRW. The FP&A Grants Officer reports to the FP&A Director who is based in Denver Colorado.

The location of this position is flexible but time zones with shared office hours to Central European Time Eastern Standard Time or East Africa Time will be preferred. The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely. This position may be based in the following locations where HRW has an office: New York Washington Stockholm Miami London Brussels Amsterdam Berlin Nairobi or Johannesburg. This position will be able to work remotely but will be expected to travel to HRW offices as required.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop all donor grant budgets including liaising with senior program and development staff to ensure grants are being spent according to donor intent and within designated time frame;
  2. Periodically monitor grant budgets performance through BVA analysis and ensure that performance is within expected ranges advising relevant stakeholders on key areas;
  3. Administer the grant financial management process by working with the Development department responding to donor inquiries providing guidance on spending and funding gaps and monitoring projects expenditure against milestones and reporting deadlines;
  4. Receive and review documentation from donors to ensure it matches reported expenditure and is sufficient for grant and statutory audits;
  5. Create budgets and reports for local HRW charities and entities ensuring compliance with grant requirements and reporting standards;
  6. Assist in budget planning and financial data analysis for grantfunded programs including updating our organizational forecast for changes in grant income and expenditure;
  7. Utilize internal database planning and reporting systems (Netsuite Salesforce) to update various expense and revenue status reports monthly; and perform database maintenance as needed (i.e. journal entries and other accounting adjustments);
  8. Assist the FP&A Officer in monitoring and tracking the global revenue budget;
  9. Contribute to the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures;
  10. Develop and document processes and protocols helpful to the FP&A team to increase efficiencies and reduce redundancies and error;
  11. Support the continuous improvement development and management of grant project accounting systems and procedures;
  12. Demonstrate inclusive behavior and consistently adhere to HRWs internal values;
  13. Perform additional tasks as required by the FP&A Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A bachelors degree or equivalent work experience in finance accounting business administration or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of three years of direct finance experience is required including prior experience working in grants management and nonprofit/NGO finance.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Previous experience in and/or demonstrated knowledge of grant budgeting and reporting with evidence of progressing responsibility is required.
  2. Strong knowledge of financial principles accounting budgeting and financial analysis.
  3. Excellent computer knowledge including advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and database systems is required.
  4. Outstanding timemanagement skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail are required.
  5. Selfmotivation and the ability to take initiative prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team are required.
  6. Excellent communication creative problemsolving and strong organization skills are required.
  7. Effective oral and written communications skills in English are required.
  8. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is necessary.
  9. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  10. Experience with NetSuite financial accounting system PowerBI or other visualization tools and Salesforce is preferred but not required.
  11. Experience with AI or machine learning tools is preferred but not required.
  12. Proven interest in human rights is desirable.

Salary and Benefits: HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employerpaid benefits. The salary range for this position if based in the US is USDplus benefits. Salary ranges outside of the US vary based on location and you will receive specific salary ranges based on your location early during the recruitment process.
