Compensation and Benefits
Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4608 $4838 per month
Full CSU Classification Salary Range:$4608 $7998 per month
- This is a fulltime (equivalent to 40 hours per week) probationary nonexempt position.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical dental and vision plans membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) sick and vacation time and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary
Under general supervision by the Chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences the Instructional Support Technician (IST II) is expected to provide comprehensive support services to the department disciplines which make extensive use of materials supplies and equipment in both undergraduate and graduate laboratories and instructional courses.
The interdisciplinary nature of the geosciences requires this individual to primarily work collaboratively with students and faculty within and outside our department. The incumbent must also be organized an excellent communicator and able to keep detailed and comprehensive records (e.g. safety training instrument operational procedures equipment usage logs).
The primary purpose of this position is to implement a full range of assignments that support the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Projects require an increased depth of knowledge of EES an understanding of laboratory techniques and methods choosing suitable materials for related instructional needs and the ability to operate and perform routine maintenance of scientific lab and field equipment.
Key Qualifications
- Knowledge of:
- Research methods and techniques commonly used in earth and environmental sciences.
- Materials supplies and curriculum used in earth and environmental science laboratory and field environments.
- Safety practices procedures rules and precautions associated with scientific equipment laboratory environment and field working conditions.
- Skill/Ability to:
- Work with various individuals and groups of people across campus and in the community (e.g. students faculty staff administrators public) in a collegial and collaborative manner.
- Demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty staff and students from diverse ethnic cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Operate technical equipment related to earth and environmental sciences.
- Adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment related to earth and environmental sciences.
- Troubleshoot and address challenges (e.g. research teaching laboratory equipment) and resolve with creative solutions.
- Manage the logistics of and planning organizing and scheduling field trips classes and outreach activities related to earth and environmental sciences.
- Maintain department inventory and safety records.
- Use computer technology systems and software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite Google Suite technical software).

Education and Experience
- Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to Earth & Environmental Sciences; or
- Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials supplies or equipment and in a discipline related to Earth & Environmental Sciences may be substituted for one year of the required experience: or
- Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials supplies or equipment and in a discipline related to Earth & Environmental Sciences may be substituted for the two years of required experience.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Earth and/or Environmental Sciences or related field of science.
- Experience conducting research in Earth and/or Environmental Sciences or related field of science.
- Experience arranging field trips for large groups.
- Experience providing instructional support services in the discipline of Earth and/or Environmental Sciences or related field of science.
- Experience curating mineral and rock specimens and maps.
- Experience design educational displays and demonstrations.
- Experience operating departmental equipment.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) prepares students to pursue a broad range of careers in academia industry government and teaching by providing them with educational training and the indoor and outdoor opportunities to obtain a solid foundation in the Earth and Environmental Sciences.
The Earth and Environmental Sciences are interdisciplinary integrating principles of physics chemistry biology and mathematics as well as quantitative and critical thinking skills to address geological and environmental challenges. Our small closeknit department gives students the chance to get to know faculty personally and every student has the opportunity to conduct research or complete an internship before they graduate. Our program emphasizes field and laboratory investigations of the environment and its geological context and history. Over 18 courses include field trips where we take advantage of the universitys proximity to the Sierra Nevada the California Coast Ranges coastal California and the desert provinces.
