Job Details:

Mercer University is searching for an Assistant Director of Access and Accommodation on the Atlanta Georgia campus.


Responsibilities:

The focus of the position is to support the Atlanta Access Office to ensure the provision of accommodations for students with disabilities as required by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Amendments of 2008 providing ADA compliance.

The Assistant Director of Access and Accommodation engages students with disabilities in an interactive process to develop accommodation plans provides support for a caseload of students refers students to appropriate campus resources and provides education and training to campus and community partners.

This position is the initial point of contact on the Atlanta campus for students with accommodation concerns or faculty concerns and will perform an initial review of off campus clinical setting student teaching internship and externship site accommodations and make recommendations to the Director.

This position provides direct support to individuals with disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Conducts disability eligibility analyses provides referrals approves reasonable accommodations and connects individuals with services to support their personal and/or academic goals. Educates campus constituencies regarding support for individuals with disabilities and facilitates compliance with the ADA/ADAAA and related federal state and local regulations and University policies.

On the Atlanta campus this position manages the overall daily administration of the Access and Accommodation Office including but not limited to:

  • Maintaining confidentiality of University and student records as applicable;

  • Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to technology equipment applicable laws regulations standards and/or systems;

  • Increases understanding regarding issues affecting individuals with disabilities by delivering presentations trainings workshops and/or education materials related to research and best practices;

  • Assists individuals with solving obstacles unique and/or common to individuals with disabilities; interfaces with campus constituencies to ensure individuals gain equitable access to resources;

  • Educates students families faculty and staff on appropriate services for and communications with individuals with disabilities; compiles and distributes necessary documentation to verify the need for accommodation;

  • Performs intake interviews to gain a foundational understanding of individual needs and evaluates information from medical and/or psychological professionals to determine eligibility; makes referrals and/or consults with the Director as necessary;

  • Works with individuals to determine reasonable accommodations needed for academic professional and/or personal success; connects individuals to and/or provides direct resources and services;

  • Oversees testing for students with accommodations;

  • Conducts meetings with students regarding accommodations. Coordinates services and accommodations for students to meet individual needs based on documented disabilities;

  • With a primary focus on Atlanta campus students reviews student documentation from medical psychological and educational professionals in addition to program and technical standards utilizing professional judgment to help determine appropriate accommodations;

  • Responsible for coordinating all Atlanta Commencement and Professional School Ceremony Accommodation needs. Also accountable for conducting campus training for schools departments and services offered at the Atlanta campus regarding ADA and accommodations. Additionally in the absence of the director this position will meet with the ADA Committee for file reviews and will make decisions for all campus student accommodations. This position is also responsible for presenting at all Atlanta campus orientations for programs;

  • Supervises student staff at the Atlanta campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelors in Psychology Sociology Higher Education Disability Studies Counseling Special Education Rehabilitation Counseling or related field is required along with at least two years of experience working with students with accommodations ADAAA Section 504 and Section 508. This may also include experience in administering services for people with disabilities to include identifying and implementing academic accommodations. Candidates with a masters degree experience at the postsecondary level with disabilities knowledge of different types of disabilities knowledge of applicable laws and regulations and/or familiarity with the range of assistive technology used by students in a postsecondary setting are preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of college student development is needed to provide counseling to students

  • Knowledge of the challenges faced by students with disabilities is needed to provide appropriate resources

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are needed to clearly communicate with students parents faculty and administrators

  • The ability to keep updated accurate and confidential records is needed to maintain medical documentation

  • Knowledge of computers software and assistive technology to organize and disseminate information

  • Ability to provide solutionfocused counseling is necessary to help students make independent choices

  • Knowledge of Federal and State disability laws and regulations is needed to develop policy and procedures

  • Ability to read medical documentation and psychological reports is needed to determine appropriate accommodations.
