Job Description

The STEPS program works in partnership with the Department of Corrections to provide integrated through care support. The AOD Reintegration Service is designed to achieve a positive prosocial recovery orientated culture and service where people leaving prison are well supported to transition back into the community.

The AOD Reintegration Case Worker will be responsible for facilitating and developing recovery case plans and reintegration services for participants of the STEPS Program a partnership between Palmerston and Southwest Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) in line with the Department of Justice Case Management plan.

The role will input into the design and deliver a range of support programs in both pre and post release settings.

The SWAMS is dedicated to enhancing employment opportunities and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This position is designated under Section 50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA) and as such only Aboriginal people are eligible to apply.

This role is based at Bunbury Regional prison but will be an employee of SWAMS. It is a varied role and can include:

  • Facilitate and develop recovery plans and programs in line with the Department of Justice Case (DoJ) Management plan. This will also include working with STEPS participants to develop relapse prevention plans strategies and tools.
  • Work alongside the Family Reintegration Worker to support families with a focus on reintegration planning through early engagement and continuity. Linking participant with communitybased services pre and post release
  • Where applicable using own lived experience (family/carer perspective) to connect with and support families and participants.
  • Assist with pre and post release careplanning including providing responsive support for families during the transitional period postrelease.
  • Support skills development and awareness of families on the recovery experience of the participant
  • Deliver skills education SMART recovery support cognitive behavioural and groups and coaching. Develop peerbased capacity with participants.
  • Building family AOD and recovery understanding and capacity
  • Specific requirements of this position include but are not limited to;

Essential Criteria

  • Hold or be working toward a relevant tertiary qualification in social behavioral or health sciences or hold experience of an equivalent nature.
  • Relevant case worker experience with demonstrated understanding of AOD recovery personcentered recovery focused and trauma informed and strengthbased principles.
  • Must have an integrated understanding in how to work effectively with Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Experience in developing and delivering education and training or educational group programs.
  • A positive attitude towards working with people from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse groups.
  • Ability to model positive behaviours emotional maturity coping skills and resilience.
  • Good interpersonal and effective communication skills and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Experience and ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Welldeveloped oral and written communication skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in an AOD therapeutic community environment or justice environment is considered advantageous.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the community as method model of care.

All candidates must have a current WA Drivers License WWCC and will be required to undertake a National Police Check prior to beginning employment.

The preferred candidate will also be required to provide a clear drug and alcohol screen prior to offer of employment.
