JOB SUMMARY

The Recreation Cultural and Facility Services department is responsible for building a healthy inclusive and vibrant City as well as ensuring that communities residents and visitors have access to the recreation and cultural places programs events and services that allow them to experience all the benefits the City has to offer and overseeing Buildings and Facilities Management for improved service delivery integration ensuring the best possible client experience in City facilities.

Under the guidance of a Coordinator you direct the daytoday operation of an Inclusive Recreation Unit camp working with children youth or adults with special needs in a therapeutic recreational or social skills summer camp. You are included in the child/youth staff ratio and are responsible for direct client care and intervention program adaptation and daily staff management to ensure a safe and enjoyable camp experience for all registered at camp.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Postsecondary Student completion of second year college or university in Recreation Child Care/Youth Worker Kinesiology or Physical Education

Two years or more of related experience is required Knowledge:

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Current Standard First Aid CPR and/or AED certificates
AODA Accessibility/IASR Training
Crisis Prevention/Intervention training certificate
Alternative Communication Systems (ASL American Sign Language) training is desirable
Ergonomic Lifts and Transfers training
Principles of Healthy Child Developmenttraining course High Five is desirable
Quest 2 Tool training course High Five is desirable

KNOWLEDGE

  • Legislation protecting rights of special needs client population
  • Health and safety legislation policies procedures and client care
  • Knowledge of learning disabilities and appropriate intervention strategies social skills development and task analysis process
  • Understanding the development and recreational needs of children
  • AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) Legislated training
  • City of Ottawa Core Training
  • Applicable Ottawa Parks & Recreation policies and procedures
  • Must possess the training experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance
  • Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures.

  • Music Arts or specialty in sports or fitness
  • City of Ottawa Parks & Recreation Core training

COMPETENCIES SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to plan operate any evaluate recreation programs for preschoolers children youth and adults with disabilities
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to train supervise and evaluate staff
  • Programming skills in crafts sports games creative play stories and music
  • Previous experience working in a leadership role
  • Experience planning and implementing recreation programs for preschoolers children youth and/or children with disabilities Ability to operate any required tools/equipment
  • Ability to follow verbal and/or written directions/procedures
  • Ability to accompany and supervise participants in a variety of environments including aquatic
  • Demonstrates supervisory and strong leadership skills
  • Conflict resolution and problem solving skills with the ability to manage simultaneous demands

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement:Various language requirements locations may require English only French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral reading and writing. Some positions required French oral reading and writing.
  • Police Record Check:The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawas satisfaction.; Note: Under the age of 18 requires a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters check in place of the Vulnerable Sector Check.; Police record checks completed by a thirdparty company will not be accepted.
