Fisheries Officer Lead for BIODEV2030 Suriname and GREAT ocean Suriname

Main Responsibilities

The Fisheries Officer is responsible for supporting strengthening implementing and evaluating WWFs Sustainable Fisheries Management strategy in close coordination with WWFGuianas oceans team conservation managers and office national partners and strategic linkages with international players. He/she will lead the BIODEV 2030 project for Suriname and the GREAT Ocean (Guianas Regional Action for a Thriving Ocean) project and will support in all marine activities including strategy development work plan implementation; engagement with governments partners donors private sector and civil society; communications; report and proposal writing and fundraising.

Activities include:

• Coordinate and implement the BIODEV 2030 activities for Suriname and the GREAT Ocean project.
• Strengthen and implement delivery of the WWFGuianas Sustainable Fisheries Management strategy and associated integrated workplans.
• Promote harmonization of the programme in particular of turtles sustainable fisheries and oil and gas related activities of work between Suriname and Guyana ensuring linkages with French Guiana.
• Assist the advancement of the national policy debate on marine and fisheries governance.
• Provide direct technical support to partners on marine conservation with the focus on sustainable fisheries and IUU fisheries.
• Demonstrate relevance of marine conservation to national development goals.

Major Duties

• Work closely with the WWFGuianas team members conservation managers and office to deliver Guianas Sustainable Fisheries Management strategy.
• Develop and provide strategic and technical guidance to build capacity of key partners to enable them to effectively engage in marine conservation.
• Coordinate with local partners and consultants the delivery of key activities (Youth ambassadors regional observatory working groups in the Maroni Estuary etc.
• Distinctive contributions on strategic planning programme development and fundraising initiatives to strengthen and operationalize sustainable Fisheries Management strategy.
• Support in Guyana and in Suriname to promote regional integration including shared methodologies indicators results and reporting.
• Promote and provide technical support for Marine turtle conservation together with partners and stakeholders incl. monitor project progress through field visits and report reviews.
• Proactively contribute to the Sustainable Fisheries Management strategy in response to emerging threats including offshore oil and gas extraction developments.
• Develop and negotiate grant agreements and consultancies.
• Support the development of advocacy informational and educational material on marine conservation and management in the Guianas in close collaboration with the communications department & stakeholders.
• Contribute to the timely preparation of monitoring plans/reports annual marine work plans and budgets as well as technical reports to donors.

Qualifications :

• BSc. degree or higher in conservation or natural resource management or other relevant fields preferably the field of marine sciences.
• Additional academic training or a degree in project management would be an asset.
• At least 3 years of professional experience in conservation or related fields including project and programme management and intermediate knowledge of fisheries marine and coastal management. 
• Working experience in the Guianas would be a strong asset.
• Experience in engaging with and building confident relationships with various stakeholders including senior contacts in government business civil society and the donor community.

Other Required Skills and Competencies

• Good technical and organizational skills are essential.
• Proven track record in successfully developing and managing conservation projects focused on the field of marine conservation fisheries and natural resource management.
• Ability to promote teamwork and support others.
• Willingness ability and availability to travel to field projects regularly.
• Ability to work effectively with local communities.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and/or Dutch and French is a pre.

Additional Information :

Working Relationships

Internal

The Fisheries Officer will work under the supervision of the Oceans Coordinator.

Will interact daily with the Oceans team and other colleagues in Suriname and Guyana as well as with WWF network staff including practice leaders practice members and donor offices as appropriate.

External

Interacts as required with relevant national and regional stakeholders and WWFFrance.
