Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi The opportunity

We are looking for an experienced journalist to join the media team as a Media Adviser in the Communications Office on a fulltime 37.5 hours pw) fixedterm basis.

Your job will be to work closely with staff and students to ensure we capture and share academic professional and research achievements throughout New Zealand.  You will be responsible for increasing the Universitys profile in the news media among key audiences and in the community at large through a variety of communication channels including print digital media relations and social networks. Our media team works across the University and its faculties to identify and share stories through traditional and new media channels and to enhance its reputation. With specific responsibilities youll also work as part of the team and be prepared to step in to assist where required.

Social media and amplifying our diverse stories media monitoring and providing media guidance are all part of this role. Your contribution will support our strategic plan Taumata Teitei and help enhance the reputation of the University of Auckland.

This role is a 10month fixedterm contract covering maternity leave. The salary range for this role is $83300 $102900 depending on experience and qualifications.

This particular portfolio looks after the Faculty of Engineering and Design.

Youll need your professional media/writing/journalism skills and to be a great communicator and networker. Largely selfdirected in line with the needs of the faculty and the priorities of the Communications Office and University it will be up to you to meet deadlines and prioritise work.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Ideally have a degree in communications journalism public relations media studies or related discipline
  • Be an experienced communications professional (likely a former journalist)
  • A high level of oral and written communication interpersonal negotiation analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • A sound knowledge of media operations with contacts across TV print radio and online; experience in liaising with and pitching to the media
  • A good eye for a great story
  • A solid understanding of traditional and social media channels
  • A solid understanding of equity issues
