Job Description

Job Summary:
Refine Plastic Surgery a premier facility specializing in aesthetic and reconstructive procedures is seeking a meticulous and skilled Laboratory Technologist. Reporting to the Head of Clinical Services the Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing routine and complex tests in the medical laboratory to provide essential data for diagnosing and treating diseases. This role is critical in ensuring the accuracy and validity of test results contributing significantly to patient care and treatment outcomes.

Role Overview:
As a Laboratory Technologist at Refine Plastic Surgery you will be a vital member of our medical team dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of laboratory practice. Your duties will include collecting and processing biological specimens conducting a variety of clinical tests across hematology microbiology immunology clinical chemistry and urinalysis and performing quality control to ensure the reliability of test results. You will also be responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment troubleshooting technical issues and adhering to strict safety and infection control protocols.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Collects processes and handles blood and/or other biological specimens according to established procedures; instructs patients in the proper collection of samples.
  • Performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology microbiology immunology clinical chemistry and urinalysis as assigned; conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood urine and spinal fluid; performs blood counts using a microscope.
  • Conducts blood tests for transfusion purposes; may draw blood from patients finger ear lobe or vein observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood samples.
  • Develops and maintains cell/tissue cultures for testing purposes as appropriate; isolates and identifies specimens using advanced laboratory techniques.
  • Performs quality control on test results ensuring validity and accuracy.
  • Performs calibration and troubleshooting on testing systems and instruments to ensure adherence to established standards of accuracy.
  • Keeps records and reports on results according to established procedures.
  • Practices safety environmental and/or infection control methods.
  • Performs miscellaneous jobrelated duties as assigned.


Requirements

Education and Qualifications
  • Higher National Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institution.
  • Excellent knowledge of laboratory operations and procedures.
  • Ability to write and review SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Minimum three years working experience in a busy medical laboratory.
  • Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board with a current practice license is mandatory.

Key Competencies and Skills:
  • Ability to maintain quality safety and/or infection control standards.
  • Ability to prepare and process laboratory samples using established protocols.
  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to perform a range of clinical laboratory tests and chemical analyses on biological samples.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to draw intravenous and peripheral blood.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols and procedures.
  • Knowledge of tissue culture procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to utilize calibrate configure and/or troubleshoot laboratory testing systems and instruments.
  • Ability to isolate and identify specimens using advanced laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Knowledge of sterile procedures.
