A Preview of Your Role

As an Intermediate AU Tax Accountant you will play a vital role in supporting staff with a diverse array of tax compliance and business services activities fostering the development of accounting and tax knowledge within the team. Your responsibilities will involve applying and refining previously acquired tax knowledge and skills contributing to the overall proficiency of the accounting function.


Gear Up for Success: Essential Qualifications
  • Completed degree from a recognized university
  • Commencement of CPA Program (preferable but not essential)
  • At least 34 years of experience in a tax/business services environment

  • Communication skills to express thoughts clearly both orally and in writing to staff at all levels of seniority and to clients/external parties as instructed; business writing with excellent spelling and grammar

Specialist/technical knowledge:

  • Understanding and knowledge of GST and income tax legislations with an ability to apply them to tax compliance issues (e.g. BAS and ITR preparation) with minimal assistance
  • Exercising initiative in resolving technical and other problems with senior staff members on jobs (ability to identify and raise review points and deliver proposed solutions)

IT/Software Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft packages (Excel and Word)
  • Utilization of relevant software applications (e.g. APS TAX XPA Xero) ATO tax portal and website CCH online tax libraries without difficulties

Your Impact: Unveiling Key Responsibilities

Technical (60% of time)

  • Assist staff with a wide range of tax compliance and business services activities and develop accounting/tax knowledge.
  • Apply and develop previously acquired tax knowledge/skills.
  • Complete all core tasks as listed on Process Management Platform (PMP) process maps after instruction and under supervision.
  • Activities included:
  • Preparation of simple income tax returns and associated schedules for individuals partnerships trusts and companies with varying forms of income expense and offsets as well as preparation of simple financial accounts including:
  • Reviewing financial statements and identifying tax reconciliation items.
  • Preparing simple tax calculations.
  • Preparing simple Business Activity Statements from client summaries or accounting software.
  • Preparing Fringe Benefit Tax returns.
  • Preparing letters for signing with suggested notes to clients.
  • Completing all relevant checklists.
  • Preparing electronic work paper projects (e.g. substantiating each number input into tax return with a workpaper).
  • Preparation of Instalment Activity Statements annual GST returns.
  • General spreadsheet and word processing.
  • Informing/following up with senior staff/Managers/Partners about work progress (e.g. asking for work review to finalize the job providing progress updates).
  • Addressing minimal tax issues.
  • Reading and researching basic tax matters.
  • Ensuring all review points are dealt with appropriately.

Process Management/Administration (less than 10% of time)

  • Complete all standard administration tasks and additional tasks as instructed and in a timely manner.
  • Activities included:
  • Routine duties (experience from previous positions):
  • Daily timesheet completion (recording time spent on assigned tasks).
  • Supporting other HLB staff as instructed.
  • Assisting with the billing process as instructed.
  • Updating PMP.
  • Timeliness and accuracy.
  • Clarification of job requirements and corresponding job completion.

Self Management (less than 10% of time)

  • Maximize own time to complete assignments and to achieve agreed performance goals.
  • Activities included:
  • Routine duties (experience from previous positions):
  • Managing own workflow/review hours spent against budget/expectations (e.g. updating PMP prioritizing & making a current job list reviewing timesheets & updating hours spent on each job comparing WIP to agreed fees avoiding writeoffs).
  • Job clarification (e.g. clarifying task/requirements/deadlines).
  • Informing/following up senior staff about work progress (e.g. asking for work review to finalize the job providing progress updates).
  • Additional duties for this position:
  • Job Control (planning assignments determining required information/assistance estimating problems monitoring budgets & productivity targets).
  • Required direction/supervision.

  • Ensuring adequate knowledge of relevant software applications used within the Tax Division.
  • Attending and contributing to team meetings.
  • Completion of compulsory training.
  • Demonstrated utilization of knowledge/skills acquired in training.
  • Punctuality.
  • Development of selfstructuring & selfreview processes.

Staff Management (5% of time applicable if responsible for subordinates)

  • Carry out staff management tasks as directed.
  • Activities included:
  • Task assignment as instructed (e.g. assigning tasks according to skill level discussing requirements/timeframe/budget).
  • Task clarification (explaining why and how to complete tasks) providing guidance.
  • Assisting with team meetings as instructed (e.g. preparing an agenda seeking agenda points from staff).
  • Clarification of job requirements and ensuring corresponding job completion.
  • Proactive.

Staff Development (5% of time)

  • Support junior staff with general daytoday queries.
  • Activities included:
  • Providing onthejob training for Graduates within their scope of responsibility.
  • Assisting with the preparation & presentation of training as instructed.
  • Participating in the mentoring program and conducting informal mentoring.
  • Clarification of job requirements and ensuring corresponding job completion.
