INFORMATION DESK ASSISTANT

Are you someone who enjoys approaching customers of all ages and cultures and can quickly help them connect with their favorite interests and information needs? Do you like tracking down information? The Schaumburg Township District Library has a 20 hour/week, part-time Information Desk Assistant position open. We are looking for a personable individual to provide library services to our customers: finding materials, assisting users with library technology, reserving library meeting spaces, and registering for library programs and events. This position involves extensive interaction with the public to provide customers access to the full range of library services via in-person, telephone, online, and other modes of delivery. Hours are as follows and requires flexibility:

- Tuesdays 3:00pm-9:00pm

- Thursdays 3:00pm-9:00pm

- Fridays 2:00pm-7:00pm

- 3rd and 5th Saturday of each month 9:00am-5:00pm

- 3rd Sunday of each month 11:45am-5:00pm

The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. Starting pay is $14.11-$21.15 based on skills and qualifications.

Position Summary:

The Information Desk Assistant is responsible for assisting and fulfilling the patrons’ need for materials, information, or services. The Information Desk Assistant is also responsible for representing the Library standards, as this position mostly interacts with the patrons.

Requirements for All Employees:

    Requirements & Skills for the Position:

  7. Ability to use workplace technology including email, internet, intranet, and Library database systems.
  8. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  9. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  10. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  11. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  12. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  13. No certificates, licenses, or registrations are required for this job.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess patrons’ needs effectively and efficiently, either in person, over the telephone, or in writing.
  • Answer patrons’ general reference inquires and directional questions about the Library and its services.
  • Assist patrons with equipment, electronic devices and related media.
  • Instruct patrons in the use of the Audiovisual (AV) classification system.
  • Search for library materials, by computer and on shelves.
  • Assist patrons at the online catalog and in the library stacks.
  • Reserve materials for patrons when the request is in-person, over the telephone, or by email.
  • Assist patrons with requests for out-of-library services through interlibrary loan.
  • Gather and process ordering information for AV materials.
  • Assist patrons with photocopy machines and SimpleScan machines.
  • Organize the feature film presentations as scheduled.
  • Maintain AV information statistics calendar on a daily basis.
  • Assist with weeding the AV collection.
  • Assist with special projects, including: create bibliographies, inventory various AV collections, survey other libraries on various topics.
  • Assist with AV displays within the department and throughout the Library.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the SIRSI computer system, the Library’s stand-alone databases, and WorldCat.
  • Treat all patrons and employees fairly and with an open mind; maintain patron and employee confidentiality.
  • Communicate problems that arise with supervisor and designee; particularly situations where patrons are not following Patron Code of Conduct.
  • Communicate clearly either in person, on the telephone and inwriting; maintain the ability and patience to understand and be understood by all patrons.
  • Keep apprised of Library programs, policies and procedures, and building layout to most effectively assist patrons.
  • Maintain working knowledge of computer systems and technology needed in the position or as an employee.
  • Cope with the stress of the job and get along with coworkers.
  • Attend meetings and training as required or requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Education and/or experience:

  • One-year certificate from college or technical school, with related experience and/or training.
  • Customer Service is preferred.
  • A background in music or experience in the audiovisual are preferred.
