Genealogy Librarian

Join an award winning Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library has an onsite full-time Genealogy Librarian position open. With a rich history and commitment to providing excellent resources, we are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Genealogy Librarian to join our team. As the Genealogy Librarian, you will play a crucial role in helping patrons discover their family histories and explore their genealogical roots, uncovering the stories that connect our community's past to its present.

Hours are as follows and requires flexibility.

37.5 average hours per week, with days, nights, and weekends as needed.

The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. The salary range for this position is $51,500 - $64,389; based on skills and qualifications.

Position Summary:

The Genealogy Librarian serves as the lead for our genealogy programs, services, and collections and is responsible for providing in person and virtual genealogy reference and research assistance to library users. This position will staff our service points, including the Reference Desk, phones, online interactions and respond to an array of challenging and detailed research questions. This position will help drive programs and services to build community partnerships, implement innovative programs that appeal to a diverse audience and develop a genealogy collection that is inclusive and reflective of our diverse community.

Requirements & Skills for the Position:

  • Two or more years of experience in a library or similar setting, using resources that enable genealogy research. Experience in video production, digitizing, and managing digital collections is preferred.
  • Active participation in genealogy/local history groups, committees or professional organizations.
  • Ability to analyze library collections and assist in their development, maintenance, and preservation; is responsible for selection, deselection, and evaluation of library materials.

  • Should enjoy engaging customers of all ages and cultures, to connect them with their interest and informational needs.
  • Must be a quick learner with excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated instruction skills. Program development skills preferred. Experience with presentation and public speaking is preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and excel in our culture.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide basic instruction to customers in how to begin genealogy research and use of genealogy resources such as census records, telephone directories, military service records, newspapers, vital records, etc.
  • Provide instruction in using online genealogy databases provided by the library.
  • Conduct research activities as directed, including 1-on-1 appointments with library patrons.
  • Responsible for collection development for the print genealogy collection.
  • Prepare finding aids in multiple formats.
  • Develop and deliver presentations to community groups and organizations to promote use of the genealogy collections.
  • Develop and present workshops and programs related to genealogy research issues.
  • Facilitate and coordinate the library’s ongoing participation in the Library of Congress’ Veterans’ History Project.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with regional genealogical societies.

Education and/or experience:

Master of Library Science (MLIS) degree from an ALA accredited school required.
