Engineering Technologist II Development Planning Assessor
Job Summary
- A Diploma in Engineering Engineering Technology or Planning
- Must be eligible to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) with ASET
- A minimum of 5 years of related practical experience
Assets:
- Experience within waste management or a related municipal field
Skills required for success:
- Ability to use AutoCAD and ArcGIS to interpret and create technical drawings
- Demonstrated experience in report writing and professional communication
- Experience in customer service and engagement with diverse professional groups
- Strong skill in handling difficult conversations and resolving conflicts with interested parties
- Excellent problem solving and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and strict deadlines
- Familiarity with the Building Code Zoning Bylaws and Complete Streets Design Standards
- Considerable knowledge of building code
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions of an advanced nature

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position

Work Environment:
- The role involves a mix of office work and field-based assignments
- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Join our Waste Services team in the City Operations department where you will play a vital role in shaping how our City grows. As a Development Planning Assessor you will be the bridge between innovative urban design and practical sustainable waste management. You will work closely with community partners to ensure that new residential developments are safe efficient and ready for the future. This is an opportunity for a technical professional who enjoys a mix of office-based analysis and hands-on site inspections. By providing expert guidance during the early stages of planning you help build a cleaner more organized Edmonton for everyone.
What will you do
- Review interpret and provide technical comments on building permits land use applications and rezoning requests
- Assess residential developments to determine the appropriate size and style of waste containers required
- Conduct swept path analysis on multi-unit properties to ensure waste vehicles can maneuver safely on-site
- Perform regular site visits and final inspections of properties before handing service over to Collection Services
- Liaise between property managers billing teams and collection sections to coordinate service delivery
- Maintain accurate records of plans drawings and correspondence using software like AutoCAD ArcGIS and POSSE
- Identify and propose improvements to development review processes and developer standards
