Job Summary

Associate EditorThe editorial team at Cottage Life is looking for a mid-level editor with 5-7 years of experience producing exceptional lifestyle content for print and digital. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently handling substantive edits on features columns and front-of-book stories; developing content ideas and editorial packages for print and online; recruiting and assigning stories to writers; and participating in other aspects of the editorial process including copyediting and addition to handling print stories theyll have sharp digital skills in particular experience in newsletter strategy and production and thorough knowledge of Mailchimp. Theyll also be a WordPress wizard and understand the importance of SEO with experience using tools to optimize we are looking for a cottager or someone with deep cottage experience but most importantly the successful candidate will understand what is so special about cottage living in Canada and have big ideas about how to make our magazine feel fresh and relevant to our audience of cottagers and cottagers-to-be. Since we want our stories to offer both good advice and a good read theyll also have a sense of fun and a lively imagination. A flexible can-do attitude is a must as is the ability to problem solve and find solutions in a fast-paced deadline-driven new role will report to the Co-Publisher & VP Content Cottage Life and is a hybrid position requiring in-office attendance at our head office in Toronto for a minimum of three (3) days per anticipated salary range for this role is $57000 - $62000 per year with final compensation determined by experience and Responsibilities & DutiesResearching and developing story ideas for print and digitalContributing to pitch and strategy meetingsAct as the handling editor championing stories including profile features service stories and front-of-book pieces through each stage of the editing process from assigning to sign offCopy editing and packaging digital stories using SEO best practices for and curating a weekly newsletterQualificationsMinimum 5 to 7 years of editing experience at a print magazine preferably in lifestyle or in digital editorialBachelors degree or equivalent in Journalism English or a related fieldStrong writing/editing skillsA track record of managing freelancersFluency with InCopy Google Docs Mailchimp and WordPressAbility to take initiative and work independentlyProficiency with digital platforms and social mediaFact checking experience an assetStrong editorial judgementPassion for Canadian magazines digital publishing and journalism
