About the Role

Based in BYDs Mulgrave Office in Melbourne the Vehicle Homologation Engineer is responsible for supporting the certification and regulatory compliance of BYD vehicles components and accessories for the Australian and New Zealand markets.

The role manages vehicle approval activities technical documentation regulatory submissions and ongoing compliance requirements. It works closely with BYD headquarters government authorities technical services test facilities and internal teams to support the timely and compliant introduction of new vehicles and product updates.

The role also monitors proposed and future vehicle regulations participates in relevant government and industry discussions and communicates upcoming regulatory requirements to the business and BYD headquarters.

On offer is a Vehicle Homologation Engineer position and your day-to-day duties will include but not be limited to:

Key Responsibilities

1. Vehicle Homologation & Certification

  • Manage Vehicle Type Approval applications approval variations new variants and model updates.

  • Review technical reports approval certificates specifications drawings and supporting certification evidence.

  • Identify certification gaps and coordinate additional testing documentation or vehicle changes.

  • Ensure relevant approvals are completed before vehicle launch registration or customer delivery.

2. Regulatory Submissions & Vehicle Data

  • Review VIN information model descriptions variant data weights dimensions and technical attributes before submission.

  • Support evaluation vehicle and other relevant import approval applications.

  • Maintain accurate records of approvals submissions approval conditions and regulatory correspondence.

  • Coordinate with internal teams to resolve vehicle data or registration discrepancies.

3. Regulatory Compliance

  • Interpret and apply ADR RVS NZTA AS/NZS ANCAP RCM and associated regulatory guidance.

  • Assess new vehicles model changes components accessories labels and software updates for regulatory impact.

  • Provide technical advice on changes required to meet Australian and New Zealand standards.

  • Support investigations into potential compliance concerns certification discrepancies and regulatory enquiries.

  • Escalate and resolve compliance risks that may affect vehicle approval launch registration or continued sale.

4. Government & Industry Engagement

  • Liaise with Australian and New Zealand government authorities on certification compliance and regulatory interpretation matters.

  • Participate in relevant government consultations industry workgroups technical forums and stakeholder meetings.

  • Monitor proposed legislation ADR amendments regulatory consultations and future vehicle standards.

  • Prepare technical summaries consultation responses and internal briefing documents where required.

  • Communicate future regulatory requirements and potential product impacts to internal teams and BYD headquarters.

5. Documentation Reporting & Stakeholder Support

  • Prepare and maintain certification documents compliance matrices approval trackers technical records and regulatory reports.

  • Provide regular updates on approval status documentation gaps regulatory risks and upcoming requirements.

  • Work with other internal departments and stakeholders on homologation matters.

  • Provide guidance to internal stakeholders on certification processes and regulatory requirements.

  • Support regulatory audits conformity-of-production activities and post-approval changes where required.

Key requirements:

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Automotive Engineering Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Equivalent relevant automotive industry experience will also be considered.

Essential

  • Experience in vehicle homologation certification automotive engineering or a related automotive technical role.

  • Understanding of Australian vehicle regulations ADRs and certification requirements.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications certification documents test reports and regulatory requirements.

  • Good understanding of vehicle specifications model variants tyres wheels drivetrain dimensions weights accessories and vehicle technologies.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately with technical data and documentation.

  • Proficient in Excel with strong data management and document control skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks follow up on outstanding matters and meet deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Mandarin with the ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with BYD Headquarters government authorities testing facilities and internal teams.

  • Valid Australian drivers licence and ability to drive as required for the role.

Desirable

  • Experience with EVs PHEVs or new energy vehicles.

  • Experience with RVSA ROVER RAV NEVDIS NZTA VFACTS or other automotive regulatory or reporting systems.

  • Experience with vehicle certification model launches product changes or vehicle approval processes.

  • Knowledge of Australian and New Zealand vehicle regulations.

  • Experience working with government authorities technical services testing laboratories or automotive regulatory bodies.

  • Experience in an automotive OEM importer distributor or certification organisation.

  • Basic understanding of UNECE/ECE regulations or international vehicle standards.
