About the role

Bush Heritages 2030 Strategy is to improve biodiversity protection function and connectivity across landscapes.

This internship will support the Bush Heritage Australia (BHA) Healthy Country Manager and Ecologist and will work closely with The Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC). WGAC represents the Wunambal Gaambera people the native title holders of 2.5 million hectares of graa (land) and wundaagu (saltwater) in the North Kimberley. WGAC leads the management of the Uunguu Indigenous Protected Area guided by Wanjina Wunggurr law and their Healthy Country Plan to protect cultural and natural values and support sustainable livelihoods on Country.

This internship will contribute to spatial mapping and protected area planning for the Uunguu Indigenous Protected Area in the North Kimberley in partnership with the Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC). The intern will support the development of spatial datasets and maps to inform Healthy Country planning and decision making working across both ecological and cultural contexts.

The internship will involve both office-based GIS analysis and travel opportunities to engage with planning processes that include Aboriginal partners and cultural knowledge holders.

What youll need to succeed

• You are a graduate with advanced GIS and spatial analysis skills or an early career spatial analyst and are keen to learn about working in partnership with Indigenous organisations and communities.
• You have a commitment and passion for nature conservation and the objectives and values of Bush Heritage.
• You have Strong demonstrated capability using Geographic Information System software (ESRI QGIS) statistical and graphic software (e.g. R) or specific environmental modelling and planning software (e.g. MAXENT Zonation).
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a small remote team.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage spatial data imagery and written documentation.
• Emotional competence with excellent interpersonal skills and capable of working effectively with a diverse range of people (staff volunteers and supporters neighbours and representatives of other organisations).
