Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) is the largest environmental legal centre in the Australia Pacific region dedicated to protecting our climate communities and shared environment by providing access to justice running ground-breaking litigation and leading law reform advocacy.

This structure includes a First Nations Strategic Advisory Committee made up of six First Nations community members from across Australia who provide strategic guidance to EDO.

EDO understands that First Nations professionals can bring both their professional skills as well as their lived experiences as First Nations peoples to their work which can provide optimal services to First Nations clients.

The opportunity:

This is a unique opportunity for a passionate and highly motivated First Nations Solicitor to join the EDOs First Nations Program to undertake exciting and impactful work on behalf of First Nations clients and communities seeking to protect their Country and Cultural Heritage.

The Solicitor Country & Cultural Heritage will engage with legal issues surrounding environmental protection Country and Cultural Heritage First Nations water justice and climate change.

We are looking for a talented lawyer with demonstrated environmental law Cultural Heritage and/or native title/land rights experience.

You will have the opportunity to build relationships and learn from a broad range of community members as well as solicitors scientists and other professionals across the EDO who work on a range of issues in pursuit of environmental justice climate change pollution mining Cultural Heritage water justice biodiversity and human rights.

Travel for outreach purposes including to remote locations will be necessary.

Candidate Profile:

You are a First Nations lawyer with environmental Cultural Heritage native title/land rights law or legal education and outreach experience looking for an opportunity to use your professional skillset and lived experience to work with the largest public interest environmental law centre in the region.

You will have a valid practising certificate or the ability to obtain one and PAE working as a lawyer with demonstrated First Nations community engagement and environmental law Cultural Heritage and/or native title/land rights experience. This position represents an opportunity to deliver legal services about Cultural Heritage laws in a culturally safe manner to First Nations clients and communities.

Key selection criteria:Essential requirements

• A practising certificate or entitlement to one with a minimum of 2 years post admission experience desired.
• Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: administrative law environmental law and/or Cultural Heritage law native title/land rights legal outreach and legal education
• Strong problem-solving judgement and communication skills with the ability to work productively and collaboratively to deadlines and consider a range of perspectives in decision-making.

Substantive experience

• Understanding of Cultural Heritage legislation across State Territory and Commonwealth jurisdictions and relevant international mechanisms available to First Nations communities including through the United Nations.
• Experience developing legal education materials for First Nations and/or bilingual communities undertaking law reform or policy work and/or working with First Nations people or diverse communities and individuals.

• Ability to confidently exercise sound judgement and make decisions in high-pressure situations while working effectively both autonomously and within a collaborative team environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication file management organisational and delegation skills.
