Retail Energy Counsel

Axiom is supporting a leading Australian renewable energy company seeking an experienced lawyer or compliance professional to join its Melbourne-based legal team on an initial three-month contract. This role will provide critical support to the retail energy business with a strong focus on Victorian energy retail regulation compliance and breach reporting. The successful candidate will work closely with commercial stakeholders and regulators providing pragmatic legal advice across a broad range of regulatory and commercial matters in a fast-paced in-house environment.

Responsibilities:

• Advise the business on Victorian energy retail regulatory requirements providing practical legal guidance on day-to-day compliance and operational matters.
• Assess manage and coordinate regulatory breach reporting obligations under the Victorian energy framework ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
• Partner with internal stakeholders and liaise with the Essential Services Commission (ESC) on regulatory compliance reporting obligations and related matters.
• Provide general commercial legal support across the retail energy business advising on contractual governance risk and broader regulatory issues.

Requirements:

• 5 years PQE with experience advising on energy retail regulation regulatory compliance or commercial legal matters within the energy sector.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Victorian energy retail regulatory framework including breach reporting obligations and engagement with the Essential Services Commission (ESC).
• Strong commercial drafting and advisory skills with the ability to provide pragmatic business-focused legal advice across a broad range of matters.
• Excellent stakeholder management communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities in a dynamic in-house environment.
