Join the Biodiversity Conservation Trust and play a vital role in protecting and enhancing biodiversity on private land. As a Regional Conservation Officer youll work directly with landholders communities and stakeholders to deliver conservation programs that support sustainable land management and long-term environmental outcomes.

About the role

Our BCT SydneyHunter team is seeking a Regional Conservation Officer to support landholders and contribute to the delivery of private land conservation. This is a practical landholder-facing role working directly with landholders to support the management of private land conservation agreements acting as a key point of contact throughout the agreement lifecycle. The role combines fieldwork stakeholder engagement and project delivery.

You will help landholders understand and meet their agreement obligations provide practical customer service provide technical advice and contribute to meaningful conservation outcomes.

The position will lead and support project and program delivery through ecological and field-based assessments spatial mapping and technical input into management plans while collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

The position will report to the Sydney Team Leader and will likely have a strong focus in the Western Sydney and Greater Sydney Basin. BCT clients in this area includes a range of landholders including developers Councils peri-urban landholders and smaller family or lifestyle properties.

A significant part of the role will involve annually reviewing a range of offset-related agreements and support landholders to deliver their agreement obligations including Biodiversity Stewardship Agreements associated with the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme.

About You

Youre a motivated and collaborative professional with a passion for conservation and strong stakeholder engagement skills. You bring:

  • Experience or qualifications in natural resource management ecology or conservation
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with landholders and partners
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Experience using GIS or spatial data tools (desirable)
  • A current drivers licence
  • Willingness to travel for and physical ability to undertake field work
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are strongly encouraged to apply consideration will be given to all suitable applicants (GSE Rule 26)

Essential Requirements:

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience in natural resource management or biodiversity conservation
  • A current Australian Class C drivers licence and willingness to travel.

The New South Wales Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) is a not-for-profit statutory body established under Part 10 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and managed by a Board appointed by the Minister for the Environment.

The Trusts roles are to support and encourage landholders to enter into agreements to conserve and protect biodiversity on private land guided by the governments Biodiversity Conservation Investment Strategy; secure biodiversity offsets when developers choose to pay into the Biodiversity Conservation Fund; and other activities that promote greater awareness of appreciation and understanding of biodiversity and the importance of conserving it.

We acknowledge the ongoing custodial responsibilities of the Aboriginal peoples of NSW to care for Country and are committed to establishing meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal peoples in the management of the environment.

Participation in the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme (BOS) and the BCTs private land conservation (PLC) programs

The successful applicant for this role will be required to declare any conflict of interests related to the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme as defined in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme Conflict of Interests Protocol. This ensures the department is made aware of potential conflicts of interest so they can be appropriately managed.

Where an applicant has a high-risk defined interest in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme they may be required to divest this interest before being employed by the department.
