About the Role

Youll join the team delivering the Bus Solution package of the Opal Next Generation (ONG) programan exciting high-impact initiative that will reshape how passengers plan journeys pay for travel and access real-time information across the NSW Opal-enabled bus network.

As Project Controller youll play a pivotal role in the success of the TfNSW Opal Next Generation (ONG) project. You will be responsible for driving strong financial control across the full project lifecycle including forecasting cost management cash flow margin performance and revenue recognition. Working at the intersection of finance delivery and commercial decision-making you will provide the insight and discipline needed to support a complex high-profile program.

You will report directly to the ONG Program Director with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Head of Finance Trapeze Group ANZ and act as a trusted adviser to project leadership while ensuring alignment to broader finance frameworks controls and reporting requirements.

How youll make an impact:

Financial Performance Management (Revenue Cost & Margin):

  • Own integrated project financial performance reporting including revenue cost and margin analysis with variance commentary.
  • Maintain the project budget and forecasts ensuring they reflect current approved scope known risks and committed expenditure.
  • Monitor project margin performance identifying risks to profitability and recommending corrective actions.
  • Provide forward-looking financial insights to support delivery decisions including scenario modelling for risks and opportunities.
  • Prepare cash flow forecasts ensuring alignment between revenue realisation and project expenditure and support project-level treasury management.
  • Produce financial reports and schedules required for governance forums steering committee packs and client submissions.
  • Ensure all financial reporting aligns with the standards and requirements of the Modaxo under the dotted-line reporting arrangement.

Project Accounting & Cost Control:

  • Maintain the project general ledger ensuring all transactions are accurately coded reconciled and supported by appropriate documentation.
  • Manage project cost tracking across all workstreams ensuring expenditure is accurately coded and reported.
  • Monitor and control project expenditure against approved budgets identifying variances early and escalating financial risks to the Project Director.
  • Manage month-end close processes including POC calculation revenue recognition accruals journals and reconciliation of project accounts.
  • Manage intercompany billing and recharge processes for the project with the agreed teaming arrangement ensuring accurate and timely cross-entity cost allocation and monthly reconciliation.
  • Maintain a register of contractual security instruments for the project tracking amounts trigger conditions and expiry/release dates and coordinating timely action on issuance renewal or release events.
  • Maintain audit-ready financial records and documentation across the project lifecycle.

Revenue Recognition & Commercial Delivery:

  • Own end-to-end revenue recognition under IFRS 15 ensuring alignment between contract terms delivery progress and financial outcomes
  • Develop and maintain revenue forecasts ensuring alignment with project schedules and delivery plans
  • Identify and mitigate revenue leakage risks including missed milestones unbilled work or unapproved variations
  • Manage project invoicing and revenue milestone administration coordinating data approvals and documentation inputs to support accurate and timely billing.
  • Track contractual revenue milestones and ensure invoicing is prepared submitted and followed up in line with contract terms with revenue recognised in accordance with IFRS 15.
  • Support accounts receivable management including monitoring outstanding invoices and liaising with client finance teams to resolve queries.
  • Manage supplier and subcontractor invoice processing verification and payment in accordance with project procurement and approval policies.
  • Maintain change and variation registers to support commercial governance milestone billing and audit readiness.

PMO & Governance Financial Support:

  • Support PMO governance processes by providing financial inputs to reporting cycles assurance checkpoints and documentation standards.
  • Assist with preparation of steering committee governance and executive materials where financial data or analysis is required.
  • Support change control processes by tracking the financial impact of variations scope changes and approvals.
  • Maintain version control and document management discipline across all financial artefacts.
  • Liaise with the Modaxo Group Finance Leads under the dotted-line arrangement to ensure compliance with organisational financial policies chart of accounts and reporting obligations.

Financial Compliance & Audit Readiness:

  • Ensure all project financial activities comply with applicable accounting standards organisational policies and contractual obligations.
  • Maintain documentation and audit trails to support internal and external audit requirements.
  • Implement and monitor financial internal controls relevant to the project escalating control gaps or compliance risks to the Project Director.
  • Support preparation of statutory funding-body and client compliance submissions where financial information is required.

Stakeholder & Commercial Engagement:

  • Act as the primary financial contact for the project providing clear timely financial advice and reporting to the Project Director and project team.
  • Provide strategic advice on revenue margin and financial risk supporting informed decision-making.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with the Modaxo Group Finance Leads and relevant finance counterparts across the group.
  • Liaise with the broader project team to ensure financial data accuracy completeness and integration with delivery reporting.
  • Support client-facing financial reporting and commercial interactions where required.

What Youll bring to the Role

  • Experience in project accounting financial management or commercial finance roles preferably within government transport technology or infrastructure environments.
  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting Finance or a related discipline; CPA CA or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project budgets forecasting cost control and financial reporting across complex programs.
  • Experience working within dual or matrix reporting line arrangements with an ability to balance the requirements of the Project Director and BU Finance Leads.
  • Strong understanding of project accounting principles commercial contract administration and financial governance requirements including working knowledge of IFRS 15 revenue recognition as applied to long-term contracts.
  • Advanced proficiency in financial management systems ERP tools and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance audiences.
  • High attention to detail and strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced delivery environment.
  • A proactive and solutions-focused mindset with a strong commitment to accuracy compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Travel: Occasional interstate and international travel to coordinate with Modaxo global engineering teams and finance counterparts.
