Job Summary

About The Role

The role of Upholstery Craftsman begins with having a thorough knowledge of the mechanics of furniture construction and the many and varied combinations of stuffing and covering processes. The craftsman needs to know straining and tensioning techniques how various covering materials perform the key elements of frame strength which facilitate the furniture coping with constant use and simple design conception along with 3D visualisation. They also should know the workings of various sewing machines upholstery equipment and hand tools.

Other Skills Required

  • General knowledge of the different types of fabric leather and vinyl
  • How to cut out each type of material and what is involved in pattern matching of patterned fabrics
  • How to safely handle each type of material and how to sew each type of material
  • How to safely use all kinds of upholstery hand tools
  • How to use measuring equipment including fixed rulers and tape measures
  • General knowledge of different types of back-tack and products for hidden fixings
  • General knowledge of gimp braid threads zips piping sliders touch tapes eyelets press studs and other accessories


The Craftsman Must Also

  • Have an understanding of the finished articles they are making so as to facilitate how they fit into the production process and the level of quality and expertise required
  • Be able to understand work process instructions whether written or verbal
  • Be able to work in a team
  • Keep their work area clean and tidy
  • Have 1-2 years of experience within the field


Daily tasks include (though they are not limited to):

  • Stripping Furniture
  • Preparing Frames
  • Cutting Foam Poly and Fabrics
  • Sewing Foam Gluing Stapling and Finishing Processes


Quality controls follow strict protocols to ensure high standards of excellence are adhered to. This role fits into the Production Team of the Organisational Chart.
