Primary Engineer
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Electrical Design Engineer Primary to join our dynamic engineering team. This full-time position is based in Melbourne Sydney Brisbane or Perth providing an exciting opportunity to deliver technical designs for primary electrical systems across a range of major infrastructure projects in Transmission & Distribution (T&D). These include substations (MV/HV/EHV) solar farms wind farms Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and transmission systems (overhead lines and underground).
As an Electrical Design Engineer Primary you will contribute to the development of safe compliant and optimized designs for high-voltage equipment substation layouts and system integration. Working collaboratively within the team you will play a key role in delivering high-quality outcomes with opportunities to grow your skills and expertise in the field of renewable energy and large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Develop designs for primary systems including substation layouts high-voltage equipment busbar configurations earthing systems and lightning protection.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards such as AS 2067 IEC 60076 and AS 62271.
- Prepare and deliver design outputs at various project stages: 30% (Preliminary Design) 60% (Developed Design) 80% (Detailed Design) and IFC (Issued for Construction).
- Collaborate with secondary (protection & control) civil structural and SCADA disciplines to ensure design alignment across all areas.
- Follow design control processes aligned with ISO 9001 standards.
- Participate in design reviews and ensure deliverables meet quality standards prior to issue.
- Support load flow and fault level analyses insulation coordination studies and earthing studies contributing to the validation of equipment ratings and system configurations.
- Identify potential high-voltage hazards clearance risks and constructability issues.
- Contribute to Safety in Design (SiD) workshops and maintain awareness of design-related risks.
- Assist in the preparation of equipment specifications datasheets and technical schedules.
- Support the evaluation of vendor submissions and assist with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
- Provide technical input during construction installation and commissioning phases.
- Respond to RFIs and assist in the development of as-built documentation.
- Support senior team members in communicating with clients Owners Engineers NSPs/TNSPs and other stakeholders.
- Assist with technical meetings and design discussions.
- Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 38 years of experience in primary electrical design.
- Demonstrated experience in substations (MV/HV/EHV) and renewable energy projects (solar wind BESS).
- RPEQ or relevant certification or eligibility to obtain.
- Familiarity with NSP/TNSP standards and connection processes.
- Experience in EPC/EPCM or Owners Engineer roles.
- Develop and contribute to the design of primary electrical systems for various energy and infrastructure projects.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure designs are integrated effectively.
- Assist with technical studies design validations and compliance checks.
- Provide support during procurement construction and commissioning phases.
