About Powerhouse

Powerhouse Museum is located at the intersection of arts design science and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues. It is the custodian of more than half a million objects of national and international significance and is considered one of the finest and most diverse collections in Australia. We are undertaking a landmark $1.3 billion infrastructure renewal program led by the creation of Powerhouse Parramatta; expanded research and public facilities at Powerhouse Castle Hill; the heritage revitalisation of the iconic Powerhouse Ultimo; and the ongoing operation of Sydney Observatory.

Powerhouse Parramatta opens on7 November 2026 creating a major new cultural destination in the heart of Western Sydney.To support the opening period Powerhouse is offering TAFE NSW students the opportunity to undertake a structured hands-on placement as part of the Festival Volunteer team.

About the placement

This placement provides students with practical industry experience during the first three weeks of operation at Powerhouse Parramatta.Students will completefive shifts between Saturday 7 November and Sunday 29 November 2026 rotating through different areas of the visitor and event experience.

Students will have the opportunity to experiencedifferent aspectsof event delivery tourismguidingand visitor operations. The placement is designed to complement classroom learning by giving students the opportunity to practise their skills in a major cultural destination during its opening period.

Students will work alongside Powerhouse staff and volunteers while building confidence in visitor communication wayfinding event operations customer service local destinationknowledgeand teamwork.

Placement Rotations

Across the five shifts students may rotate through areas including:

Visitor Welcome & Tourism Experience

  • Welcome visitors to Powerhouse Parramatta and the surrounding precinct.

  • Provide information about the museum festivalactivitiesand visitor facilities.

  • Respond to common visitor questions and provide a positive first impression of the destination.

  • Develop confidence communicating with visitors from a range of backgrounds.

Wayfinding & Guiding

  • Help visitors navigate between Parramatta Station Parramatta Square PowerhouseParramattaand key locations in the surrounding precinct.

  • Build knowledge of Parramatta as a visitor destination and confidently share relevant local information.

  • Practise giving clear directions and information to individuals and groups.

  • Support accessible and inclusive visitor journeys.

Event Operations

  • Experience the practical delivery of major opening events and festival activities.

  • Assistwith event set-up pack-down and operational requirements.

  • Support visitor flow crowd movement and event-daylogistics.

  • Observe how teams communicate respond to changing conditions and deliver events in a live environment.

Programs & Activations

  • Support workshops talks creativeactivitiesand community events.

  • Assistvisitors toparticipatein activities and understand what is happening across the site.

  • Observe how public programs and activations contribute to the overall visitor experience.

  • Work alongside staff artistsfacilitatorsand other volunteers.

Industry Learning & Reflection

  • Participate in pre-shift briefings and end-of-shift debriefs.

  • Build knowledge across shifts and applypreviouslearning in new situations.

  • Reflect on visitor experience eventdeliveryand operational challenges.

  • Identifyskills and experience that can be applied to future studyplacementsand employment.

  • Enjoy working as part of a team and can adapt in a busy live-event environment.

  • Are comfortable being active and on your feet during shifts including working outdoors for some wayfinding roles.

  • Are available for Induction Training 12 October at Powerhouse Parramatta.

  • Are available to complete five shifts between 729 November 2026.
