ABOUT US:

Yorgum was established in 1991 by agroup of Aboriginal women some of whom worked in womens refuges whowere concerned about the lack ofappropriate counselling support for Aboriginal people experiencing spiritualemotional and psychological pain. They founded a service with a healingapproach rather than an ongoing crisis-driven patch-up approach.

Yorgum offers all Aboriginal people andtheir families autonomous community-based healing services that are culturallysecure trauma-informed and work within an Aboriginal Family Worldview.

The Role:

TheMental Health Counsellor supports Aboriginal children young people adults andfamilies to strengthen social and emotional wellbeing through culturallysecure trauma-informed healing practices. Working within an Aboriginal FamilyWorldview the role recognises the importance of family culture Countrycommunity and spirituality in healing while providing counselling advocacyand therapeutic support for people impacted by trauma grief loss familyviolence child sexual abuse racism and intergenerational trauma

SELECTION Criteria:

Relevant tertiary qualification in Counselling Psychology Social Work Mental Health Social and Emotional Wellbeing or a related discipline.

Demonstrated experience working with individuals and families impacted by trauma grief and loss.

Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed practice and its application within Aboriginal environment.

Demonstrated ability to deliver culturally secure and person-centered healing services.

Demonstrated experience providing evidence-based individual and group psychological interventions to youth and adults with mental health issues.

Demonstrated experience in risk assessment and safety planning to clients experiencing suicidal

ideation or issues of self-harm.

Demonstrated high level interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) and proven ability to build and maintain relationships.

Demonstrated organisational and time management skills and use initiative to work both independently and as part of a team.
