Mens Family Violence Services Australia (MFVSA) is a newly established sector-first organisation dedicated to working with men to end their use of family violence delivering evidence-informed multi-session and place-based intervention services across Australia. MFVSA commenced independent operations on 1 October 2026 and is continuing to build its service delivery team.

About the role

• Role Type: Permanent Part-time (0.9 FTE 68.4 hours per fortnight)
• Classification: SCHADS Level 5.1
• Location: Hybrid or remote apply from anywhere in Australia

The Mens Family Violence Counsellor is responsible for engaging clients to provide professional telephone (in-bound and out-bound) online and in-person counselling advisory and support services. Our clients are primarily men who use family violence but also include family members friends and frontline practitioners seeking secondary consultation and support.

This role sits within our Brief Intervention Service (BIS) a national telephone counselling program supporting men who use family violence and are waiting to access a behaviour change program or who cant access one due to remote location or language barriers.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing brief intervention counselling supported by the 5-Element Decision Tool (5EDT)
• Completing comprehensive case notes and all components of the Client Case Management system including client surveys
• Safety planning and risk assessment
• Providing referrals to longer-term local support services where appropriate
• Consulting with a Team Leader National Programs Manager or experienced colleagues on complex or high-risk cases
• Any other reasonable duties as directed by the Services Leadership Team

About you

You are a compassionate and resilient professional with experience in the family violence sector and a strong commitment to safety respect and accountability. Skilled in counselling and risk assessment you thrive in challenging environments and adapt well to changing priorities. You communicate clearly think critically under pressure and work well both independently and as part of a team. Cultural competence and inclusivity are essential along with proficiency in Microsoft Office and CRM systems.

Your skills knowledge and experience:

• Demonstrated experience working in the family violence sector; telephone counselling experience advantageous
• Completion of Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Management (MARAM) Framework training or a willingness to undergo training upon commencement
• Understanding of state-based legislation as it pertains to family violence privacy and child protection
• Demonstrated ability to work in a challenging and demanding environment including within agreed timeframes
• A demonstrated understanding of the social and gendered context of family violence and its impact on women and children
• Demonstrated personal commitment to the practice and principles of non-violence justice social inclusion and gender equity
• Commitment to working inclusively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities LGBTI people and people with disabilities

Your qualifications/competencies/licenses:

• Hold a Bachelor of Social Work or other equivalent qualification as set out in Victorias mandatory minimum qualifications for specialist family violence practitioners
• Completion of a Criminal History Check and Employee Working with Children Check (or state equivalent) prior to commencement as required by legislation and policy
