The Opportunity
Cochlear has a full-time permanent opportunity for a Director Group Tax based at our global headquarters in Sydney.
This role sits within the Finance function and reports to the Vice President Global Tax & Treasury. It leads Cochlears global tax capability across compliance reporting and governance with accountability for how tax is managed across a complex multijurisdictional environment.
The successful Director Group Tax will operate across both strategic and operational contexts. The role shapes how tax supports commercial decisions ensures regulatory obligations are met across all regions and maintains a clear and wellmanaged global tax risk profile.
There is also a clear mandate to evolve the function. The role leads the digital transformation of tax leveraging AI advanced analytics and scalable technology to improve insight efficiency and risk management across the global business.
Key Responsibilities
Own and lead the global Group Tax function covering compliance reporting advisory and governance across all jurisdictions
Provide tax input into key business initiatives ensuring impacts are understood and managed across the organisation
Oversee Australian tax obligations including income tax FBT BAS PAYG withholding tax and payroll tax
Lead tax provision reporting and tax effect accounting including delivery of group tax analysis and statutory disclosures
Maintain oversight of regional tax compliance to ensure filings are accurate complete and delivered within statutory deadlines
Establish and maintain tax governance frameworks policies and processes that support Cochlears risk profile
Manage complex tax matters with external advisors and revenue authorities including reviews and audits
Identify and assess tax risks ensuring issues are documented and escalated appropriately
Oversee the R&D tax incentive program including compliance lodgements and engagement with relevant stakeholders
Contribute to external forums where required to support tax policy or program outcomes
Digital Transformation
Drive the evolution of the tax function through AI advanced analytics and scalable technology solutions
Identify opportunities to improve how tax insights are generated delivered and used across the business
Build engagement across the team and broader stakeholders to support adoption of new approaches
Lead delivery of transformation initiatives balancing value risk and implementation considerations
Partner with Technology and Data Solutions and other stakeholders to embed new capabilities
Leadership
Lead and develop a team of tax professionals and people leaders across multiple areas of expertise
Build capability within the function and strengthen how tax supports the broader finance community
Drive engagement accountability and alignment to Cochlear leadership expectations
Maintain a strong focus on quality governance and safe ways of working
About You
To add value in this role you will be able to demonstrate the following:
Required
Degree qualification in Legal Accounting or Tax with CPA CA or Masters of Tax
Extensive tax experience within a large Australian listed outbound organisation
Strong background in Australian tax compliance tax provisioning and statutory reporting
Working knowledge of global tax concepts and crossborder arrangements
Experience with Australian R&D tax incentive frameworks
Understanding of transfer pricing in a commercial environment
Exposure to reporting systems and ERP platforms
Ability to communicate technical tax matters in a clear and practical way
Desirable
SAP experience
Experience leading change or process improvement initiatives
