About the Opportunity

The Community Support Officer directly reports to the Community Health Programs Manager and is accountable to the Community Health Programs Manager and is responsible for supporting of social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) programs and services throughout the funded service catchment at Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS). As a member of the SEWB team the position incumbent works with individuals and families to implement and evaluate wellbeing initiatives with the aim of enhancing individual and community resilience. The position advances principles of self-determination equity and access alongside funded PAMS programs including: Tackling Indigenous Smoking Environmental Health Patient Assisted Transport and Disability Support (NDIS).

ESSENTIAL:

Demonstrated client-focusedapproach in service provision with genuine understanding of factors affectingthe social and emotional well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeople within our communities;

Communicate consult and liaisewith relevant professionals clients staff and community members to achieveidentified organisational objectives and goals;

Demonstrated understanding of theunique issues effecting and impacting upon the health of Aboriginal childrenand families;

Sound written and verbalcommunication skills with Aboriginal people and stakeholders;

Demonstrated ability to workindependently and collaboratively in a team to achieve agreed goals anddeadlines;

An ability to work reside andtravel independently in a remote region;

Ability to work as part of amultidisciplinary team as well as independently when required; and

Demonstrated ability tocommunicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander peoples.

In addition to the above the desirable criteria are:

The person identifies as Aboriginaland/or Torres Strait Islander and is acknowledged as such by their community;

Experience in a Social &Emotional Wellbeing environment directing and delivering services; and

Understanding of the principles ofprimary health care and the model of Aboriginal Community Controlled HealthService.

The position involves working with a multicultural organisation where the majority of staff clients and stakeholders identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Please note: In addition to the above skills and experience the successful candidate will require an unrestricted WA C Class Drivers Licence and be required to submit a National Police Clearance (dated within 3 months) and Working With Children Check (where applicable) prior to appointment in order to be eligible for the position.

Applicants for this position must be legally entitled to work in Australia and will be required to provide evidence of this entitlement. Acceptable evidence includes an Australian or New Zealand passport birth certificate or foreign passport with relevant visa.

This position offers the opportunity to work closely with remote Aboriginal communities and make a drastic impact to the health and well-being outcomes of these communities.

PAMS operates five sites supported by a range of clinicians community health workers and other ancillary workers. Although the successful candidates will have a substantive location (Newman) they must be prepared from time to time to work across any one of these sites should they be required.

The Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service located in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia and provides comprehensive and culturally appropriate primary health care services to the Martu people of Newman and the four remote Aboriginal communities of Jigalong Parnngurr Punmu and Kunawarritji.
