APAC Environmental Leader, Environmental Assurance and Protection Team
Job Summary
You will report to the Rest of World (RoW) Environmental Assurance and Protection (EAP) Leader partnering with APAC operations leadership teams to execute environmental compliance programs ensuring adherence to all applicable national state/prefecture and local laws and regulations across three distinct regulatory jurisdictions.
The role requires:
- Complete independence in significantly complex programs where the business problem solution and risk strategy are undefined.
- Environmental engineering depth specifically wastewater treatment chemistry air emissions and hazardous waste management to credibly direct technical remediation and represent Amazon before regulators.
- Ability to navigate APAC three-tier regulatory framework and engage directly with regulators.
- Strategic direction and review of environmental operating permits licenses and authorizations across three countries.
- Leadership of continuous improvement initiatives to minimize environmental aspects and impacts including implementation of Amazons global environmental management systems.
Key job responsibilities
- Lead and execute multi-country environmental compliance across Japan Australia and Singapore including wastewater discharge air emissions stormwater waste management and hazardous materials under applicable national state/prefecture and local regulations.
- Manage and execute business conformance with Amazon EAP Management Systems policies through effective execution of geo-specific operational environmental procedures including internal systems adoption and regulatory reporting.
- Represent Amazon before regulatory authorities including Japanese Prefectural governments Australian Environmental Protection Authorities and Singapores National Environment Agency (NEA) in permit applications compliance reporting and enforcement proceedings.
- Provide strategic environmental leadership for network growth.
- Direct technical remediation programs including wastewater treatment plant operations biological treatment system optimization and capital expenditure authorization for environmental infrastructure.
- Lead ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification and recertification programs across the Australian portfolio.
- Develop and mentor a regional team (Japan Lead AU/SG Lead and supporting environmental specialists) across multiple time zones.
- Analyze environmental metrics and review weekly and monthly trends to determine where improvements are needed. Measure and analyze site performance against published requirements in environmental policies.
- Oversee work performed by relevant contractors consultants and third-party environmental service providers across three countries.
- Build collaborative relationships with operations leadership legal counsel and government relations teams to ensure environmental risks are identified early and managed proactively.
- Conduct risk assessments and environmental audits across the portfolio. Facilitate root cause analyses for all environmental incidents and recommend corrective actions for network implementation.
- Ensure compliance calendar regulatory requirements and Amazon program tasks are current across all three jurisdictions.
- Develop relevant environmental procedures as dictated by business and regulatory needs. Train site leadership and associates on their responsibilities under each policy.
- Travel up to 50% across Japan Australia and Singapore.

You own environmental compliance across Amazons APAC operations - Japan Australia and Singapore. Your day moves between regulatory strategy and hands-on problem solving: engaging government authorities guiding your regional team through permitting for new site launches and partnering with operations leaders and legal counsel to manage environmental risk. You build systems and processes where none exist balancing technical depth with strategic prioritization across three countries three regulatory frameworks and multiple time zones. No two days look the same but every day connects back to keeping Amazons growing network compliant and operational.
About the team
The Environmental Assurance & Protection (EAP) Rest of World (RoW) team safeguards environmental compliance across Amazons international operations spanning 11 countries. We are a lean high-impact team of environmental leaders embedded across APAC Latin America and the Middle East each owning their regions regulatory strategy end-to-end. We build environmental management systems partner with operations to launch sites compliantly and represent Amazon before regulators worldwide. Our team operates with high autonomy a bias for action and a shared commitment to protecting both the communities where we operate and Amazons license to operate. This role is a critical part of that mission.
- 10 years of risk management audit legal compliance or related field work including engaging with external stakeholders experience
- Experience in risk management audit legal compliance or a related field including engaging with external stakeholders
- Experience in team management with 5 or more direct reports
- Experience implementing lean principles and process improvement in an operational environment
- Experience working within a global company with multi-country responsibilities
- Bachelors Degree in environmental engineering chemical engineering civil engineering or related field
- Experience with audit or risk program design control environment process documentation and control mapping
- Experience managing large teams across multiple locations and languages
- Experience in a fast-paced high-tech company or experience completing complex tasks quickly with little to no guidance and react with appropriate urgency to situations that require a quick turnaround
- Masters Degree or Professional Engineer (PE) / Chartered Engineer designation in environmental or chemical engineering
- Direct experience with APAC environmental regulations particularly Japan (Water Pollution Control Act Waste Management Act Prefecture-level engagement) and/or Australia (EPA frameworks ISO 14001 National Pollutant Inventory).
- Hands-on experience in environmental engineering operations including wastewater treatment air emissions control stormwater management soil/groundwater remediation or hazardous waste treatment systems with environmental capital expenditure planning and authorization ($1M projects)
