Aboriginal Tenancy, Support and Advocacy Practitioner

We are seeking a passionateand community-focused advocacy practitioner to support Aboriginal and TorresStrait Islander families living in mainstream public housing where theirtenancy is at high risk of breakdown. This role works alongside families to strengthenhousing stability improve access to services uphold tenant rights andpromote culturally safe outcomes.

The practitioner will buildtrusted relationships with families housing providers communityorganisations and government services to ensure Aboriginal families are heardrespected and supported. This position is Full time (1FTE) 38 hours per week fixed term until June 2028.

GEGAC is an AboriginalCommunity Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting ofabout 200 staff GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holisticservices in the areas of Primary Health Social Services Elders &Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for theself-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services thatenhance social emotional and spiritual wellbeing with culture at the heartof everything we do.

Position Purpose

The Aboriginal Tenancy Support and AdvocacyProgram objective is to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islandercommunity members and their families living in mainstream public housingcommunity housing or Aboriginal housing to access culturally safe andappropriate services where their current tenancy is at high risk of breakdown.

Households are supported tostabilise and maintain their tenancy by addressing the issues placing thetenancy at risk.

This program provides casemanagement and referral to relevant services which focus on identifying thetenancy issues intervention and the physical emotional and cultural safetyand wellbeing of the renters. Specialist support services are inclusive of thesuite of programs delivered by GEGAC or referral to external services asrequired.

This position will provideoutreach interventions and intensive case management working in collaborationwith the renter the landlord key stakeholders and specialist support servicesto achieve outcomes that lead to an ongoing and sustainable public or communityhousing tenancy.

Key Selection Criteria

High level of administrative skills andcomputer literacy including use of Word Database and maintaining an electronicdiary management system.

Well-developed communication advocacyand negotiation skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills bothverbal and written.

A demonstrated knowledge of the localAboriginal and or Terres Strait Islander community culture and understandingof factors that impact the social economic spiritual wellbeing and housing ofAboriginal people and their family networks.

Demonstrated ability to develop tailoredcase plans that identify and proritise support needs.

Proven ability to work independently andwithin a team environment.

Effective time management skills.

Sound knowledge of the ResidentialTenancies Act (Victoria) 1998 and Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunalprocesses.

Experience and understanding of homelessnessthe public/community housing sectors and associated key stakeholders andsupport agencies would be highly regarded.

Qualifications and RegistrationsRequirement (Essential or Desirable).

Valid Victorian drivers licence ESSENTIAL

Demonstrated equivalent expertise andexperience to undertake a range of activities through a relevant degreediploma substantial relevant experience or an equivalent combination ofqualifications training service and/or study ESSENTIAL

A satisfactory Working with ChildrenCheck and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL

A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islanderbackground DESIRABLE

Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGACrequirements ESSENTIAL
