Autonomous UAV for Early Fire Detection (Final Year Project)ion
Description: For my project, I developed an autonomous UAV system capable of detecting early-stage fires in real time. The drone features a combination of thermal and RGB cameras, onboard processing, and a wireless alert system. The goal was to provide rapid fire-spotting for forests and industrial sites where human monitoring is difficult.My Role: I designed and implemented the full robotics stack, including sensor integration, embedded C++ and Python code, motor control, image processing pipeline, and real-time fire detection logic. I also handled flight-stabilization tuning, communication between Pixhawk and Raspberry Pi, and field testing.Technologies Used: C++, Python, ROS2, OpenCV, YOLO, Pixhawk, Raspberry Pi, IMU/GPS, UART/I2C/SPI, PID control, BLDC/ESC motor systems.Results: The UAV successfully identified fire hotspots, triggered automatic alerts, and maintained stable autonomous flight during testing. The project strengthened my experience in embedded systems, robotics software, AI vision, and real-world integration.The project was officially presented to the Lebanese Civil Defense, which validated the concept and adopted it as a potential tool for fire response.
