Call for PhD Applications: How collaborative strategies can create innovation ecosystems

Dr. Dirk Michael Boehe (Full Professor in Strategic Management)
Funding: 4-year doctoral contract starting in October 2025
Location: Rabat Morocco
Prerequisite: Master degree in Business & Management Collective Intelligence Computer Science Economics Sustainability (and fields of research related to the project)
Application process: description
The projects overarching aim consists of contributing to the literature about the emergence of innovation ecosystems focusing on the role of collaborative strategies during this critical phase. While existing research has extensively covered the concept of innovation ecosystems few studies have delved into the emergence of these ecosystems. Specifically the project aims to explore how organizations collaborate with which partners despite sometimes diverging interests to create these ecosystems. This remains a research avenue in need of thorough investigation.

The successful candidate will accompany the different phases of above-mentioned project collect and analyze primary and secondary data on their role in the formation of innovation ecosystems in the Moroccan or African context write up several manuscripts for high-quality academic journals transfer the results to education technology application and conduct large-scale tests using experimental designs among other activities.

- How can an innovation ecosystem be created or emerge
- What collaborative strategies facilitate the emergence of innovation ecosystems Between which actors do these take place
- What tensions arise during the emergence phase of an innovation ecosystem How are they managed
A multi-level approach to studying the Moroccan ecosystem would be particularly welcome.
Skills
You have a solid academic background excellent English skills and experience in at least one of the following research skills: quantitative research experimental designs systems dynamics and simulations. You have strong analytical skills; you are self-motivated and you are able todeliver high-quality output under severe time pressure and you are resilient to stress and setbacks.
Supervisor information
Dr. Fernandez is Full Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Montpellier. Her research focuses on the dynamics of cooperation and competition within business ecosystems and networks. Dr. Fernandez has published extensively in leading academic journals and brings a wealth of experience in overseeing collaborative research projects that bridge academia and industry. Her leadership of the CENA-A project underscores her commitment to advancing understanding in how collaborative and competitive strategies shape the landscapes of innovation ecosystems. Anne-Sophie has published over 20 studies in prestigious international journals as well as books and book chapters (see her profile here).
Dr. Boehe is Full Professor of Strategic Management at Africa Business School (ABS). Before joining ABS Dirk held full-time faculty positions as professor of international business at Massey University New Zealand the University of Adelaide Australia Insper Brazil and the University of Fortaleza Brazil. He held several academic leadership roles such as Director of the Master of International Business and of the PhD Program (University of Adelaide; ABS) Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in Business Administration and Director of the Postgraduate Program in Business Administration (Brazil). In addition he gained industry experience in international logistics export advising and market research among others. Dirk has published over 40 studies in prestigious international journals as well as books and book chapters (see his profile here).
