Job Summary

Wound Care Technician

Job Summary The Wound Care Technician provides clinical support to the wound care team in the assessment treatment and management of patients with acute and chronic wounds. This position assists with wound care procedures maintains accurate documentation promotes infection prevention and patient safety and supports patients and caregivers with appropriate wound care education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist licensed nurses physicians and wound care specialists with wound assessment and treatment.
  • Perform wound care procedures within the scope of training certification and applicable regulations.
  • Cleanse wounds and apply prescribed dressings wraps compression therapy and other wound care products as directed.
  • Assist with measurements photographs and documentation of wound progress.
  • Observe wounds for changes in appearance drainage odor swelling or signs of infection and promptly report concerns to the appropriate clinician.
  • Maintain and prepare wound care supplies equipment and treatment areas.
  • Follow infection prevention sterile/aseptic technique and standard precautions at all times.
  • Assist with patient positioning and transfers during wound care procedures.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on basic wound care dressing changes skin protection pressure injury prevention and when to report changes as directed by the clinical team.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient records in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Coordinate with nursing staff providers therapists and other members of the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Monitor wound care supplies and communicate inventory needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in healthcare nursing support wound care long-term care rehabilitation home health or a related setting preferred.
  • Wound care certification or specialized wound care training preferred.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification may be required.
  • Knowledge of basic wound care principles infection prevention skin integrity and pressure injury prevention.
  • Ability to recognize and promptly report changes in a patients condition.
  • Strong communication organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Compassionate patient-centered approach to care.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position including standing bending assisting with patient positioning and lifting as required.

Work Environment

This position may work in outpatient wound care centers skilled nursing facilities rehabilitation facilities long-term care settings or other healthcare environments. The technician may be exposed to bodily fluids and must consistently follow appropriate infection-control and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend stoop reach and assist with patient positioning.
  • Ability to safely move or assist patients according to facility policies and training.
  • Ability to use appropriate PPE and perform wound care procedures safely and effectively.
