As partners in the instructional process paraeducatorss who work in programs supported by Title I/31a funds must meetoneof the following requirements:
- High school graduate or equivalent (GED) required; associate degree or coursework in education psychology or related field preferred
- Experience working with children or adolescents in a school or behavior support setting is preferred
- Knowledge of PBIS frameworks and schoolwide behavior systems
- Completion of (or willingness to complete):
- Managing the Cycle of Behavior Escalation training
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students
- Associates Degreeor60 semester hours at an institution of higher educationorMeet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate through passage of a formal state or local academic assessment approved by the State Board of Education.
a. Michigan Test for Teacher Certification Professional Readiness Exam (MTTC)orthe original Basic Skills Test (MTTC)
or
b. A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the
mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam or
c. ETS Parapro Assessment A passing score of 460 is required.

7. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Trained or willing to be trained.

The Refocus Room Paraeducator plays a critical role in supporting student behavior and maintaining a positive school climate by supervising and managing the buildings Refocus Room (SHIFT Room). This position provides students with a structured supportive environment to de-escalate reflect and develop self-regulation skills enabling them to successfully return to the classroom.
The Refocus Room Paraeducator uses PBIS-aligned practices to reteach behavioral expectations build positive relationships with students and support the overall implementation of Tier 1 and Tier 2 behavior systems within the school.
- Provide a structured supervised environment where students can de-escalate reflect and refocus their behavior
- Ensure clear and consistent entrance and exit procedures for all students
- Maintain a calm safe and supportive environment conducive to self-regulation
- Facilitate the use of reflection sheets calming strategies and problem-solving tools
- Treat student misbehavior as an opportunity to teach and reteach expected behaviors
- Support students in developing self-management and self-regulation skills aligned to the schools behavior matrix
- Utilize PBIS strategies to reinforce positive behaviors including maintaining a 3:1 positive-to-corrective interaction ratio
- Identify and minimize triggers supporting students in remaining or returning to a calm state
- Collaborate with building administration and school staff to communicate student needs and support plans
- Build positive supportive relationships with students across the school
- Maintain accurate daily data using the Refocus Room/SHIFT Room Google sign-in/sign-out system including:
- Student name
- Time in and time out
- Reason for referral
- Share monthly Refocus Room data with building administration and the Tier 2 PBIS Coordinator
- Support data-informed decision-making related to student behavior and interventions
- Maintain consistency and professionalism in all student interactions
- Follow building procedures and expectations for behavior support systems
- Participate in relevant training and professional learning opportunities as assigned
