POSITION SUMMARY:
The Machine Shop Supervisor will be responsible of day-to-day operations of the machining department to meet safety quality delivery cost targets and all sustainment/improvement related action and activities. This role will be responsible of managing people schedules workflows equipment and continuous improvement initiatives (including Parker Lean System practices) while ensuring compliance with company standards and applicable regulations.
SCOPE OF WORK:
- Oversee daily machining operations (CNC and manual) across multiple machines and cells.
- Plan prioritize and assign work orders to meet on-time delivery and productivity goals.
- Ensure adherence to safety environmental (EHS) and quality standards such as AS9100.
- Manage a team of machinists operators and handle staffing training and performance.
- Maintain process control: setups tool management and program control.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and escalate equipment downtime with Maintenance.
- Drive continuous improvement using Parker Lean System (PLS) tools: 5S standard work visual management kaizen.
- Monitor production metrics (OEE scrap rework first-pass yield cycle time) and implement corrective actions.
- Control inventories (WIP raw material tooling consumables).
- Collaborate with Quality Engineering Supply Chain and Safety to resolve issues and improve processes.
- Support cost reduction through waste elimination optimized setups and programs and tooling/process improvements.
- Enforce documentation control: routings work instructions drawings programs and change management.
- Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
- Ability to plan set priorities for the team and direct technical efforts to meet business objectives.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
- Regular consistent and punctual attendance is required. May need to work nights and weekends variable schedule(s) and additional hours as necessary.
- Ability to explain a range of complex technical information.
- Effective interpersonal verbal and written communication skills to drive tasks to completion.
Safety & Compliance
- Lead by example and maintain a zero-injury culture; enforce PPE lockout/tagout machine guarding and EHS procedures.
- Conduct safety talks near-miss reporting and corrective actions; participate in audits.
- Lead coach and develop team members; conduct performance reviews and skills assessments.
- Manage staffing levels shift coverage and training plans (cross-training upskilling).
- Schedule jobs balance workloads and approve setups; remove constraints to meet takt/schedule.
- Transfer new products into production and continually look for ways to improve existing products from a design for manufacturability approach.
- Develop and deploy standardized work instructions to ensure consistency in processes.
- Validate in-process and final inspections before releasing parts.
- Ensure compliance with specifications and drawings. Drive root cause and corrective actions focus and develop a zero-defect culture.
- Maintain calibration and proper use of metrology equipment (e.g. CMM micrometers).
- Coordinate PMs and repairs; track machine health and reliability; reduce unplanned downtime.
- Implement 5S standard work visual controls SMED and kaizen events; sustain improvements.
- Manage tooling life and inventories; optimize cutting parameters and programs for throughput and quality.
- Track labor utilization overtime scrap/rework and consumable spend; execute cost-reduction plans.
- Partner with Engineering on manufacturability programming and process changes.
- Work with Supply Chain on material availability and vendor/tooling issues.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in CNC operations setups and troubleshooting.
- Strong blueprint reading; understanding of cutting tools feeds/speeds work holding.
- Experience with CAD/CAM (e.g. Mastercam) and metrology (CMM height gauges micrometers indicators).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Knowledge of ERP (SAP preferred) routings and production reporting; SPC familiarity.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally to solve problems independently.
- Excellent ability to apply a systematic and analytical approach to problem-solving.
- Demonstrated application of Lean/PLS tools (5S standard work visual management kaizen SMED).
- Root cause analysis and corrective action (5-Why fishbone PDCA).
- Familiarity with AS9100 ITAR and PPAP/APQP as applicable to the business unit.
- Clear communication coaching and conflict resolution skills.
- Strong problem-solving decision-making and prioritization under time constraints.
- Proven ability to drive accountability and sustain improvements.
- NIMS Machining Certified Quality Inspector/Technician (CQI/CQT) Lean/Six Sigma Yellow/Green Belt CNC programming credentials.
- Ability to stand for extended periods lift 35 lbs. and work around industrial noise.
- Comfortable with shop-floor presence and adherence to PPE and safety protocols.
- Willingness to work flexible hours/shifts as needed to meet production demands.
- Bachelors Degree in related discipline required.
- 10 years in machining operations (CNC and/or Manual) with complex components.
- 3-5 years in a supervisory role machine shop environment required.
