Job Summary:

As the Physical Therapy Assistant you will perform physical therapy treatments to patients under the direction of and as an assistant to a licensed physical therapist.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. The assistant demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development the ability to identify age/developmental specific data the ability to recognize specific response to treatment provides appropriate data to other caregivers and involves family and/or significant other in decision-making related to plan of care as described in the departments policies and procedures.

2. Administers active and passive manual therapeutic massage and heat sound water and electrical stimulation treatments such as ultrasound electrical stimulation paraffin aquatics Iontophoresis whirlpool Ther Ex cervical and pelvic traction Jobst pump mobilization and hot and cold packs to treat patients.

3. Administers traction to relieve neck and back pain using intermittent and static traction equipment.

4. Instructs motivates and assists patients in learning and improving functional activities such as transfers ambulation and daily-living activities.

5. Observes patients during treatments and compiles and interprets data on patients responses to treatments and progress and reports orally and/or in writing to physical therapist.

6. Fits patients for adjusts and trains in the use and care of orthoses prostheses and supportive devices such as crutches canes walkers and wheelchairs.

7. Confers with members of physical therapy staff and other health team members individually and in conference to exchange discuss and assess patient information for planning modifying and coordinating treatment programs.

8. Directs and gives instruction and monitors treatments given by aides.

9. Assists physical therapist in measuring patients joint range of motion length and girth of body parts and vital signs to determine effects of specific treatments; assists physical therapist to compile data for patient evaluations. Assists in progression of patients program.

10. Performs related duties as assigned.

11. POPULATION SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

a. Demonstrates ability to assess and manage pain.

b. Treats children and adolescent patients for developmental level.

c. Treats geriatric patients for hearing vision and mobility.

d. Treats mentally disabled patient based on developmental level.

e. Demonstrates ability to recognize positioning needs in physically challenged patients.

f. Identifies and implements appropriate safety measures.

g. Uses appropriate methods to communicate with patient and/or family/significant other including but not limited to tone of voice speaking slowly and distinctly repeating instructions several times using simple medical terms holding and cuddling infant and facilitating parental interaction.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from an accredited two-year program for physical therapy assistant or equivalent

  • Licensure by the Ohio State Physical Therapy Board as a Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant (LPTA)

  • Maintains continuing education to possess required CEUs

  • CPR
