Packaging Can Line Operator


Summary:

The Can Line Operators primary responsibility is to ensure the smooth and safe operation of all can line machinery functions including the proper and appropriate start-up and shut-down of mechanized units. The Can Line Operator will work closely with the Packaging Manager for inventory reports product and supplies reports product change-overs and addition the Can Line Operator will also work closely with the Lab for product specifications Lab reports and to gain knowledge of hold tickets and blend-back procedures. The Can Line Operator will assist with inventory. This position requires operating equipment and minor troubleshooting as necessary. Supervisory skills or background helpful.


Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Know the line can machine operations including: Mixer Sweeco All Fill scales Lidder Gas boxes vacuum pump Seamer labeler Case Off Case Sealer air compressor electrical boxes and PLC.
  • Examine and inspect containers materials and products to ensure the product being packaged is within specifications.
  • Remove defective products or materials. Trains and directs (with limitations) the activities of the can line personnel.
    Communicate with the packaging swing shift about possible problems products needing blending line changes etc.
    Record all necessary information on the appropriate reports on time. Records must be legible accurate and complete in English.
    Knowledge of cleaning procedures; complete cleaning reports for each product run. Practice good manufacturing procedures.
    Familiarity with wood boxes augers and conveyors.
  • Ability to follow Lock-out / Tag-out procedures. Knowledge of hazardous analysis critical control points (HACCP) - Sweeco magnets Safe Line.
  • Understand the removal installation and cleaning procedures for the Bag House and star valve.
  • Be or become familiar with product specifications and supplies necessary for: Cans and lids labels shippers and customer specifications.
  • Good knowledge of date codes machinery used for date coding and the methods and appropriate locations for date codes.
  • Familiarity with scale set-ups and check procedures.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures including machine shut-down.
  • Keep the manager informed of progress and/or problems.

Completes other duties as and Skills:


  • Knowledge of can line equipment policies and procedures to ensure the safety of product and personnel.
  • Ability to give instruction and teach others regarding processes and equipment operation to include (but may not be limited to): All Fill operation labeler case off machine and stacker.
  • Ability to complete paperwork and reports; basic math skills needed.
  • Good communication skills both written and oral. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Ability to monitor self and others to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Ability to delegate; must work well with all levels of staff.
  • Safety and Quality conscious.
    Education:
    Education must be at a level that enables accurate reading writing calculation and communication of the required materials and instructions to complete job responsibilities. High school diploma/equivalent or higher education preferred.
    Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to stand bend sit or move repetitively for up to 12 hours
  • Must be able to lift regularly up to 50 lbs without assistance and up to 100 lbs with assistance.
  • Ability to tolerate dust or chemicals.
  • Ability to work safely around moving parts and equipment.
  • Bending stretching lifting reaching climbing crawling and fingering are required. Must be able to see and hear sufficiently to operate equipment safely in an environment with high levels of noise and low-lit areas.
  • Quick reaction time good hand/eye coordination ability to perceive and judge distances and see details at close range.
  • Willing to work weekends holidays and overtime as needed.
  • Must be able to work in a manufacturing and general warehouse environment with exposure to extreme heat or cold steam dust wet/humid conditions loud noises low-lit areas and cramped or crowded conditions.

Supervisor Duties:
The Can Line Operator will assist with teaching and instruction of certain can line positions but does not have supervisory authority.
Working Conditions: Normal plant/manufacturing/warehouse environment. Hours of operation are 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Must be available for all days and all hours. Position is very physical/hands-on. Will be exposed to high levels of noise heat cold dust and wet and humid conditions as well as other environmental factors typically associated with a packaging or warehouse environment.
