I. Job Summary
The incumbent is responsible for the daily oversight of assigned audits and projects ensuring consistent quality of work and timely performance. The individual could supervise small teams for ad hoc technical audits on a project-by-project basis performing first stage review of process documentation workpapers analytical results and conclusions.
The audits will focus on the three primary objectives of: (1) process efficiency and effectiveness; (2) cost savings / cash flow improvement and; (3) effectiveness of controls and information / financial integrity.
The individual will also take an active role in one or more other departmental initiatives such as those driven to improve quality and or coverage ongoing education and continuous improvement. The individual communicates the WM strategy and related strategic objectives and aids in supervising audit/project execution in line with those strategies. The individual assists in annual and ongoing risk assessments for the development of the Annual Audit Plan. The individual proposes audit scope and approach Internal Audit & Controls (IAC) management once agreed upon leads audits and reviews of business processes incorporating highly complex application systems to assure their effective and controlled integration with WM business objectives and strategic direction.
The individual is responsive to company business or other factors that might change the risk landscape and focus of particular audits.
II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Works with Operations Fleet and other core business functions to identify operational and financial inefficiencies to support core initiatives
- Maintains a solid familiarity with WM Way and other changes to operational procedures (collection and post-collection).
- Conducts on-site operational audits at locations across North America and Canada including direct observation of frontline processes yard and facility walkthroughs and interviews with site leadership and frontline employees.
- Assesses consistency of SOP execution across locations identifying behavioral cultural or environmental drivers impacting adherence.
- Viewed as a technical or subject matter expert with demonstrated understanding of the following: WM corporate and field operations financial operational or digital components.
- Interacts with mid and upper management of areas being audited to ensure professional and quality-driven execution of the audit work. Supports mindset and coaching development.
- Assists to continue to advocate the departments vision in relation to employee development and is proactive in that charge.
- Works closely and collaborates with multiple managers and areas of IAC to develop and use effective tools and capabilities.
- Effectively supervises small teams for projects and ensures that conclusions in line with WMs policies and procedures.
- Assists in maintaining the audit schedule for effective use of resources and meeting departmental commitments coordinating with other management team members as appropriate.
- Ensures the teams conducts root cause analysis adding business value beyond compliance auditing.
- When requested assist management in developing and implementing a plan to correct deficiencies or leverage opportunities.
- Provides risk consultation/advisory services to all parts of the company which may include travel up to 50% of the time.
- Conducts follow-up reviews to assure expected outcomes are realized.
- Prepares well written accurate and timely reports for presentation to appropriate management.
III. Qualifications
A. Required Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree (accredited)
- High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four years of relevant work experience
- 6 years relevant audit or equivalent experience (in addition to education requirements)
B. Preferred Qualifications
- Masters Degree or equivalent in Finance Business Administration Accounting or similar area of study
- 6 years as an auditor in a large accounting firm or internal audit position in a Fortune 500 company (in addition to education requirements)
- Finance & AccountingCertified Public Accountant (CPA)
