Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History

What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings 2 technology service centers and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.

What you will do at Harris County Public Library:

Responsible for a wide array of tasks designed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable library experience for patrons. Duties include patron assistance engaging in activities and program delivery outreach and maintenance of library materials. Delivers comprehensive customer service actively connects patrons with the information they need and efficiently handlescirculation tasks. Support innovative library programs demonstrating a thorough understanding of all library operations and consistently delivering an exceptional customer service experience.


This is a part-time temporary position with an ending date of December 31 2026.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide customer service and manage customer accounts using the integrated library system software in the library and during outreach events

  • Assists patrons on computers answering phones and assisting with request for assistance

  • Checking in and delivery of holds returned items and new items

  • Pulling expired holds shelving returned and new items running reports and looking for lost items on the shelves

  • Basic reference service in the library and during outreach events

  • Promote library services to the community

  • Accurately enter data handle sensitive customer information and handle cash transactions

  • Maintain and promote an engaging and attractive library collection

  • Attend staff meetings activities and professional conferences and actively serve on committees

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements


All applicants must register and take the HRT Clerical Skills Test and score a minimum of 80% with a typing speed of 30 wpm and 80% accuracy.

Education:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalency
Experience:
  • One (1) year of verifiable Customer Service experience

Additional Information:
  • Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties
  • Documentary evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED) must be readily available upon request
  • Candidates must complete a clerical skills test and achieve a minimum typing speed of 30 WPM with at least 80% accuracy

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word Excel PowerPoint Outlook)

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Cash handling practices ensuring accountability and accuracy

  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a discreet and effective manner

  • Proficient with Social Media (Facebook Twitter Instagram etc.)

  • Proficient with the Internet and Office 365

Work Environment:

  • This job typically operates in a professional office environment.

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • At times work can be performed in an outdoor environment and possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.

  • There could be exposure to dangerous or aggressive/adverse populations.

Physical Demands:
  • Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking standing stooping bending reaching lifting and carrying.
    Ability to lift carry and exert up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lifts carries and exerts up to 40 pounds.
